The Art of Photobombing

Welcome to...

.

Pho-to-bomb-ing [foh-toh-bom-ing] verb: The act of intentionally ruining other people's photographs by jumping in, posing, making funny faces, etc., ideally without the knowledge of the main subjects until later, when they view the photos and get a surprise.

What is Photobombing?

Remember those class pictures from grammer school, where there was always at least one kid who made a funny face? These kids were the unwitting pioneers of photobombing.

Now that it seems everyone is traveling with some form of camera, photos are being snapped everywhere, and more and more photobombers are showing up, and it's been raised to an artform by some particularly stealthy bombers.

So beware. You never know when you're going to get photobombed.

Photobombing Techniques

...........The Background Bomber

The "Background Bomber" lurks behind photo subjects quietly and stealthily, and with cat-like reflexes (something you can't be taught-- you just have to be born with), pops up or strikes a pose at just the right moment. They may make a funny face, do something goofy, or obscene, or rude, or-- for those who practice the art of subtlety-- just smile. The poor unsuspecting subjects have no way of knowing what's going on until they review the shots. Sometimes the photographer is concentrating so much on the main subjects, he doesn't even notice-- though at times, he is fully aware and is aiding and abetting a bomber. The more serious and oblivious the main subjects are posing, the funnier a photobomb can be.

.................The Dive Bomber

The "Dive Bomber" is quick and agile, and his timing needs to be even better than the background bomber's. He lies in wait in the foreground, and at the right moment springs into action, popping into the picture right in front. Usually with this style bombing, it's not usually as big a surprise when the photos come back, and the risk the dive bomber takes is revealing himself before the event is over. For the rest of the day, everyone taking a picture keeps an eye on him. Still, with great risks come great rewards, and the effect can be dazzling. You can go with the partial or the full body dive bomb.

...............The Stealth Bomber

The "Stealth Bomber" can show up anywhere in the frame, usually peeking through little cracks or popping up from behind something. Sometimes they are hard to notice even after the picture is reviewed. The talent here is to find just the right spot. They look innocent enough just lingering somewhere in the background, but you can't trust them. The Stealth Bomber has mastered the art of subtlety in photobombing.

My youngest daughter likes to jump into photos any chance she gets; my brother likes to act silly in the background, too, when an opportunity presents itself. The photos can be quite funny unless doing serious photography work; then it can become quite annoying to have someone popping "in" out of nowhere.
