Calendar Price Comparison

Here's a quick comparison of the price of a single standard size wall calendar, plus shipping. The following are the sites I'm familiar with which sell calendars, ordered from cheapest to most expensive. The price listed is the regular price and does not reflect any discounts or sales happening right now (though if you scan this page you may be able to find some!).

The shipping price listed reflects the lowest available shipping cost for shipping one calendar (if you want it there quicker, you'll pay more). Some places also offer discounts when you buy more than one, and of course different places offer different layouts, printing quality, and other features, so you may not want to choose by price alone. These prices were correct in 2010 and may have changed since then.

You don't have to limit yourself to photos. Children's artwork looks great on custom items, and makes wonderful gifts for family and friends. Scanning your kids artwork gives the best results, but if you don't have access to a scanner you can take a close-up picture with your camera. (Examples above from Zazzle.com ...click on pictures to visit artist's store).

PHOTO CARDS: A Comparitive Review

And more comparative reviews below...

Of course, cost isn't the only factor in deciding where to shop. It's nice to have some information about the quality of the products offered. Below I offer some comparisons between the quality of products I've bought at multiple sites:

CARDS
I've bought folded greeting cards through several sources, mostly printed with artwork, not photos. Here's my thoughts on these:

Zazzle
Zazzle offer two sizes of folded greeting cards. The outside of the cards are a high quality glossy print. You can print and add pictures to the inside and a portion of the back of the card as well. You can search for card templates, and as any artist can add templates through Zazzle's contributor program, there are a lot of choose from. They have a wide selection of fonts too. Their quality is excellent, but their prices are a little high if you are buying in bulk (for individual cards it's not bad, though). Their designer is versatile and easy to use.

CafePress
CafePress has excellent quality and good prices if all you want to do is put a picture or design on the front of a card and message on the inside. You can't print on the back or the inisde of the front cover (left, inside of card) and you can't customize with text unless you create a text graphic and upload it yourself. Thought they have cards contributed by artists too, you can not customize these. Their designer is easy to use but not very versatile.

Winkflash
Winkflash is one of the cheapest places I've found to print photo cards, especially when cards are on sale (which is frequently). The quality is good so long as you don't need an item centered. Cards with artwork have come back off-center, and I'm not sure if this is because of a printing error or because their editor makes it hard to properly center artwork on a card. You can print on the front, and add text to the inside, but not the back. I can't remember if you can add pictures to the inside too.

Shutterfly
The printing on the cards from Shutterfly is someonewhat grainy/pixelized (and no, my images weren't too small). They are only semi-gloss, not full gloss. You can print on the front and inside (not back), and they have many templates and settings so you can add multiple pictures easily. You can also add text on the inside and outside of the card. Their designer is fairly easy to use, and you can send the card directly to the recipient, which saves on time and shipping cost.

Arts Now/ Arts Cow
I have only ordered cards from Arts Now ONCE and will never do it again. The cards had a waxy film that made damage easy when the cards were knicked or scratched. They were packaged with other bulky items in a way that did not protect the cards from being bent or damaged. And, they were sent with the wrong sized envelopes. ArtsNow has several spin off stores which basically sell the same items under a different name, including ArtsCow...so if you see a shop that seems to be selling the exact same items as ArtsNow, its probably a different version of this store run by the same company.

Below are some other comparison/reviews I found online of different custom products.

Removing Backgrounds On Photos and Artwork

Sometimes you take a great photo with a lousy background. Or you have a drawing by your child, but when you scan it, the background doesn't come out white. Backgrounds on photos and scanned artwork can be removed using a graphic program such as the Gimp (a free photo editing program - you can find more free photo editing programs here). To learn how to remove a background from your art or photos, click here.

Below are some examples of printed gifts using artwork or photos with the backgrounds removed.

FUN TIP: Photoshop Editing for Classic Art Coloring

If you happen to have Adobe Photoshop, you may want to check out this article by James Delaney on how to improve the color of your pictures using the "Match Color" tool with classic artwork. It's really quite amazing what you can do with this! If you would like to try it with the Gimp, there's a tutorial here.
Important!

TIP: Save in Bulk

Many custom gift stores offer discounts when you buy duplicate custom gifts. So, buying the same gift for several people can save you a lot--depending on where you shop!

Back to School Photo Projects

#1: Family Picture
Send a little of yourself to school with your child! You can make stickers with family pictures and stick them on the inside of your child's notebook or lunchbox, or make a picture key chain and attach it to her back-pack. There are many places to buy custom photo stickers, including Snapfish, Zazzle. You can find key chains at various sites including Photoworks and Zazzle (see examples of Zazzle's custom borders below--you can search under templates to find lots more!). Discount Photo Gifts also offers luggage tags, which are a fun alternative!

#2: School Calendar
Make a calendar! Many shops allow you to start your calendar on any month you choose, so you create calendar that starts right now to record all those school events (in stead of having to write them down again in January). Plus, these can be decorated with your own photos or your child's artwork! Very cool!

#3: Fun-Raiser
Need a school fund-raiser? CafePress,Zazzle, Spreadshirt and many other print on demand services offer free shops where you can sell your own custom printables. You can sell t-shirts, cards, mugs, mousepads and more with your school mascot or student art, without having to pay for anything up front because items are only printed once customers order them!
Important!

TIP: Shop Early to Save on Shipping

Customized photo gifts make great presents--but remember that they can take longer to process than pre-made gifts, so check shipping times and don't wait until the last minute to order!

Fun Fall Project Idea

Here's a fun Halloween photo project: Take a photograph of your Jack-O-Lantern, crop in a square right around the pumpkin, then turn it into fun magnets, buttons, stickers, ornaments, ect. Any round item works well! (See example pictures below).

Here's some sites where you can make:

Round Stickers: Zazzle
Round Ornaments: Arts Cafe & Winkflash
