Pictures of Scotland: Fife (including the Home of Golf and University Town of St Andrews)
Fife, in Scotland, also known as The Kingdom of Fife, is a beautiful and sometimes overlooked region. Fife is most famous for being home to St Andrews, the little university town that also happens to be the home of golf. St Andrews is full of wonderful medieval history, in addition to the world-famous Old Course. However, the rest of Fife is also well worth a visit: from the pretty fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife to the once royal town of Dunfermline, and from the tiny town of Falkland where Mary Queen of Scots stayed to the iconic Forth rail bridge.
Join me for a visual tour of the loveliest places in Fife in photographic posters. Perhaps you will find the perfect souvenir of your visit to Fife!
St Andrews
St Andrews: Golf, University and History
St Andrews barely needs an introduction, at least for the golfers. Home of one of the most famous golf courses in the world, it also has a world-class university where Prince William and Kate Middleton were students.
Long before this, St Andrews was an important destination for pilgrims with its great Cathedral, and was home to bishops and men (and later also women) of learning. Learn more on the related St Andrews, Fife page.
The Rest of Fife
While the other towns and villages of Fife may be less well-known, many have histories just as ancient as St Andrews.
Dunfermline, for example, was home to Kings and Queens of Scotland with its Abbey and Royal Palace -- hence the name Kingdom of Fife.
The body of Robert the Bruce is buried here. Falkland has an equally rich history with the world's oldest still-in-use tennis court where Mary Queen of Scots reputedly played tennis at Falkland Palace. Medieval castles are dotted throughout the Fife landscape.
And last, but not least, there are the impressive twin Forth Bridges -- the distinctive rail bridge that is a masterful feat of Victorian engineering, and the more modern suspension road bridge.
