Closure of The Photoshelter Collection

Ranked #12,284 in Arts & Design, #233,276 overall

On 10 October, 2008 the Photoshelter Collection Closed

This collection filled the gap between the huge stock agencies and microstock, while exhibiting the most photographer friendly profit sharing plan of them all. Where should up and coming photographers go now?

Photoshelter Collection Closing - October 2008

On 11 and September 12, 2008 users of the stock photography site Photoshelter.com received an email letting them know of the company's decision to exit the stock photography business themselves and to focus on their other product - The Personal Archive.

The site gave hope to many photographers who wanted to provide their photographs for sale, but either:

  • Didn't want to work with microstock which sells photographers work for sometimes as little as a dollar per sale.

  • Didn't want to work with one of the larger agencies that often do not provide a fair split on their revenues with photographers.

Photoshelter paid photographers the largest percentage of each sale of any stock agency.  The business model they were using for the site is captured in the about me area of their Myspace page:

The newly launched PhotoShelter Collection enables photographers of all levels to benefit from a worldwide image-selling marketplace that returns commercial and creative independence back into the hands of the artist. For commercial photo buyers, The PhotoShelter Collection aims to offer the freshest collection of imagery online.

Below are links to the sites who were in competition with Photoshelter in the stock market.   If anyone has any ideas on where photographers effected by the closure, please provide the links below.

At the bottom of this page you will find the links to the major players in the stock and microstock market.

My 2c. Microstock is an evil business model which by design abuses photographers.

The discussion I'm trying to generate here is for suggestions on where a photographer should go from here.

Your input is appreciated!
