My Thoughts on Photoshop

A Monthly Column

After a month's hiatus, the column is back for the month of November! First up, I want you to check out a great blog on design and design standards, Design By Fire.
-----

Remember, remember, the month of September...first site to remember this month is www.textureking.com. Great downloadable textures at this site!

ColorJack is a great new color palette resource.
----
--
Hello August...first up, check out Ultrashock for some great Flash, Photoshop, and Illustrator tuts.

From Dave Cross, here is the portfolio of graphic artist Jason Gaylor.

Happy July! Let's see what we have for this month...well, even though I'm tooting my own horn here...this is still a great search engine. I've compiled a listing of the best Photoshop sites out there and made them searchable. Looking how to create fire in Photoshop? Something else? Go to Rollyo Photoshop Tutorial Search for more info.

Courtesy of Jennifer Apple at PhotoshopSupport, there's a new digg-like social bookmarking website that's just for designers. Check it out at http://pixelgroovy.com. I've added the site's feed to this page.

Adobe Lightroom for Windows has just come out (previously there was only a Mac version available). This pro photography software (currently in beta) will help you easily organize photos and apply special effects to them. Check Lightroom out!
------------------------

Hello and happy June! First up this month...I'm sure many of you know about this site, but I would be remiss if I didn't post it for those who don't. It's http://www.lipsum.com Ever worked on a project where you didn't have copy or body text yet from the client, but you want to see how text would look in your layout? This free tool generates a user-specified amount of random text that you can use in your project! Check it out.

Helpful Links

PhotoshopSupport.com
One of the best Photoshop sites around, Photoshopsupport.com has everything - links to tutorials (including free video tutorials), brushes, actions, etc.
Adobe Studio
When in doubt, look to the source. Adobe's Studio website has some great tutorials, as well as brushes (and even displacement maps).
Phong.com
Phong has some great tutorials on special effects you can create with Photoshop, including glass effects, lighting trickery, etc.
PhotoshopCAFE
Colin Smith's PhotoshopCAFE is an amazing Photoshop resource. Make sure to check out his tutorials - he offers a wide variety of them.
PhotoshopLab
Tommy Maloney and crew - the guys behind the relatively new PhotoshopLab.com - have some good tutorials here. I especially like the Rainy Day effect and the tutorials on some of CS2's new features, including Vanishing Point and Smart Objects.
Intro to Camera Raw
For those of you working with Adobe's Camera Raw format, here is a great Quicktime tutorial by Photoshop Hall of Famer Deke McClelland.
StockXchng
StockXchng is one of the best free stock photography sites out there. I use this site frequently to find royalty-free images for use in my projects.
Photoshop User Magazine
Scott Kelby and the rest of his Photoshop User crew run the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), a large organization of people who are enthusiastic about Photoshop. NAPP members get the most value here, but there are free CS2 tutorials that introduce some important Photoshop features.
Layers Magazine
Layers Magazine, also run by Scott Kelby, deals with the whole range of Adobe Creative Suite products - not just Photoshop.
PhotoshopTV
This is my favorite new link. PhotoshopTV is a video podcast headed up by the Photoshop Guys - Scott Kelby, Dave Cross, and Matt Kloskowski (all NAPP members and Photoshop gurus extraordinaire). Each week's new episode has news, tips/tutorials, and more. The downloaded episodes average about 100-120 MB, so make sure you have 1)a broadband connection and 2)enough space.
Designorati
Beautifully designed site by Pariah S. Burke and others. You can find articles and how-to's on the creative culture, Photoshop, graphic design, and much more.
Spoono
Nominally a web designer's resource, Spoono does offer some decent Photoshop tutorials. Be sure to check in its "Fresh Meat" section on the home page.
Lunacore
This is a very good Photoshop resource - it has a large amount of tutorials for you to explore.
Scott Kelby's The Photoshop Insider
Scott Kelby (the leader of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals) - this is his influential blog, chock full of his observations and exclusive tips.
Worth1000.com
This isn't really a tutorials site per se - but it is a source of inspiration. Here, you can participate in (or watch) Photoshop contests. You might well come away amazed.
The Ultimate Photoshop Quiz
The Ultimate Photoshop Quiz is provided for free by NAPP. See how much you really know about Photoshop!
Aquent
Aquent is a "talent agency" that deals with - among others - creative professionals. You can post your resume here, search for job openings, and more!
Photoshop Reference Guide with Matt Kloskowski
This is a comprehensive set of tutorials hosted by informIT.com. Matt Kloskowski, one of the top educators at NAPP, posts helpful information here frequently.
Dave Cross's blog
NAPP guru Dave Cross shares his thoughts and tips on his blog.
FrenchStudio.net
Here are some interesting QuickTime tutorials on such subjects as creating scotch tape in Photoshop, glass reflections, and desaturation effects. The site is in English, but the tutorials themselves are in French. However, it's still pretty easy to see what's going on.
Photoshop Killer Tips with Matt Kloskowski
A spinoff of the hugely successful PhotoshopTV, this 1 minute podcast show features a Photoshop tip of the day (each weekday) from NAPP instructor Matt Kloskowski.
Adobe Creative Suite Podcast
Adobe trainer Terry White's Adobe Creative Suite podcast. He has some excellent video tutorials on not only Photoshop, but Illustrator, InDesign, and the rest of the Creative Suite.

Designorati : FontShop Brings Back font Magazine
Designorati: A 360-Degree View of the Creative World. Font Magazine - hmm, I hadn't heard of this one before. Check these guys out - after all, typography is one of the most important methods we designers use to communicate.
Designorati : Proxy Magazine
Designorati: A 360-Degree View of the Creative World. Adobe Proxy (formerly Adobe Design magazine) is an online PDF-based magazine that covers a range of topics concerning design and creative culture. I like to peruse the issues on their website - it's definitely one of my favorite hotspots.
