For photo contests, instead of films, camera makers use a numbering system that's closely equivalent to the old ISO ratings from film photography.

Imaging sensors in modern cameras can be adjusted to adapt to an environment with lower light levels. In photo contests, the higher the ISO setting, the higher the sensitivity. An ISO 200 for instance makes the sensor twice as sensitive, while ISO 400 makes it four times as sensitive as 100. In other words, ISO allows us to experiment which setting is the most desirable when combined with f/stop and shutter speed.

F/stop or the lens opening is determined by the ISO and the shutter speed. In photo competitions, increasing the ISO and keeping the shutter speed at ease makes it possible to shoot at a smaller lens opening (f/stop). Which will consequently increase the depth of field as well as the zone of sharpness that extends behind and in front of the point of focus. Experts usually do drills to practice their ISO management.
