It's a Hacker Con that's Out of This World!

Wi-Fi Racing. Geocaches. Rooting around in other people's boxes for fun and profit -- with their permission! Oh, and scaring the other half of the hotel when you rickroll their myspace page. They deserve it for trying to piggyback on YOUR wireless, you know.

Say Hello to PhreakNIC -- if it's fun, if it's geeky, if it involves computers, and if it's just too cool to pass up, it's here. A lot of it is themed (This year's topic involves getting the heck off this planet -- don't ask how we're gonna do THAT), but most importantly, it's all the stuff you wish they taught you in school.

We're "hacking" this page too! Lots of the things you're about to see aren't just what I've written down, but also include various little scripts and 'modules' provided by Squidoo to make sure you're always seeing the most up-to-date information about what we've got!

In other words, rather than you doing all the work keeping up with some of this stuff, we're already doing it for you (so don't forget to check back and see if it changes!)

Wait, What IS PhreakNIC?

Confused? Well, we all know that you (being the hacker you are, of course) would check Wikipedia first.

So we've saved you the trouble. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about PhreakNIC!

PhreakNIC is an annual hacker and technology convention held in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States. It is organized by the Nashville 2600 Organization and draws upon resources from SouthEastern 2600 (se2600). The Nashville Linux User Group was closely tied with PhreakNIC for the first 10 years, but is no longer an active participant in the planning. First held in 1997, PhreakNIC continues to be a long-time favorite among hackers, security experts and technology enthusiasts. PhreakNIC currently holds claim as the oldest regional hacker con and is one of the few hacker cons run by a 501(c)(3) tax-free charity. The conference currently attracts about 350 attendees, with steady growth every year.

PhreakNIC consists of presentations held by various volunteers on a variety of subjects. Usually there is a theme for the conference, but the presentation topics may stray from the theme. There is also an anime room showing films at all hours and a hospitality lounge. The entire hotel is networked, top to bottom, with Ethernet to guest rooms and to conference presenters and 802.11b wireless access at all other points. The Nashville Linux Users Group held a Linux Installfest from PhreakNIC 3 through PhreakNIC X.

PhreakNIC is attended by hackers and other technology enthusiasts from across the United States, although, as a regional conference, most of its attendees come from a 2-state radius around Tennessee, including groups from Missouri, Ohio, Washington, DC, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, and of course, Tennessee.

As PhreakNIC is held in downtown Nashville, near the Tennessee Titans stadium, the exact date for PhreakNIC is not announced each year until the NFL releases its schedule in April. PhreakNIC is intentionally scheduled not to coincide with a Titans home game, to give conference organizers full reign over the venue. However, PhreakNIC is typically held around the time of Halloween.

All The Stuff Hackers Love

Come on, we know you've got a site. If you're coming to the con, add it here! We're sure it's cool.
Last Resort - The Weekly Webcomic that knows the Genius of being Evil.
A cyberpunk, furry webcomic about reality shows, criminals, mad science, vampires, and awesome artwork. Oh, and the girl who draws it is really cute and comes to the convention a lot.
G33k Shoot
They're hackers, geeks, and spooks. Who like to shoot guns. Standard tradition of any good southern hacker con, natch.
Fourth Annual Phreaknic 12 Wi-Fi Race
Run around the city with a laptop and find the roving WiFi Marker. Harder than it sounds, but more fun than we could ever explain to you.
Phreaknic 12 - October 24th - 25th, 2008 - The Official Site
You want the truth? Sure you can handle it? Get it here!
