A Little About Phuket

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and is about the size of Singapore. Features include mountains covering 70% of the island, sandy beaches in the west, and plains covering the eastern and central regions. Parks and nature preserves include the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-hunting area, a twenty square kilometer preserve that protects a rain forest region, along with the Sirinat National Park, a 90-square-kilometer preserve that includes a beach where sea turtles can lay their eggs.

Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate with the dry season from November to April and rainy season from May to October. Count on it being warm, with average highs going up to 91 degrees Farenheit and average lows going down to 73 degrees Farenheit. Average temperatures do not vary much during the year.

Transportation services include the Phuket International Airport in the north of Phuket. You can also find local taxis called songthaews, or passenger pick-up vehicles, or motorbike taxis. You can take a train to nearby Surat Thani and bus services are also available.

Planning A Phuket Vacation

You can maximize your stay at Phuket simply by following some simple travel tips, like these ones:
  • Be sure you have your passport handy. Knowing exactly where your passport is will save you a lot of hassle at the airport. If you have any trouble, be sure to visit your nation's consulate for help.
  • Book your hotel and flight in advance. Booking in advance helps insure both the availability and the rates you get and saves a lot of hassle before you set foot on Phuket. Reservations at restaurants you want to dine at are also helpful, though you should be aware of reservation and cancellation policies at the restaurants in case something comes up and you can't make your dinner date.
  • Plan your activities. Whether it's a snorkeling tour or just a day at the beach, knowing about and planning your daily activities are two useful steps in helping you relax and enjoy your vacation.
  • ...But don't be afraid to be spontaneous. Sometimes events and local attractions aren't announced on the tourist sites. If you see something that looks interesting, you don't necessarily have to skip it to make your next planned activity.
  • If you don't need it, leave it. For your safety, you should not carry any more valuables than you need on any given day. Pickpockets are a worldwide phenomenon and some of them love the tourist scene because tourists often carry their cell phones, cash, credit cards and other valuables with them. Consider carrying traveler's cheques that can be easily canceled and replaced and leave anything you don't need either at home or well secured in your hotel room.
  • Consider travel during the off season. Hotels make less of a profit on empty rooms at the end of each tourist season, so they may be willing to offer even better rates for rooms. If you are a business traveler, this is a good time to go because you don't have to bump elbows with all the people who are out enjoying their vacations.

Hotels in Phuket 2012

Historically, Phuket was a major port for trade ships and was frequented by ships from all over Europe. In trying to reduce English and Dutch influence, the Siamese made alliances with the French, including naming a French man the governor of Phuket and trading their tin exports only to the French. However, the Siamese revolted and threw out the French, establishing their independence. An attempt to re-occupy Phuket failed to re-establish the French and Phuket eventually became the administrative center of the tin trade.

With the fall of tin prices, the importance of tin mining has been reduced. Modern Phuket derives much of its economy from the tourist trade. It took a hit in 2004, when an earthquake and tsunami killed 250 residents and as many as a thousand undocumented workers and caused extensive damage. By late 2005, Phuket had largely recovered and deployed a system of buoys provided by the U.S. to provide an early warning system in the event of future tsunamis.

New hotels and tourist infrastructure are still being built. Interesting sites include historical districts like Old Phuket Town, in which tourists can see the influence of European and Chinese styles. If you're into sports, you can visit attractive golf courses or sample local sports like Thai boxing. Cultural options include classes on how to cook your own Thai meal at a local cooking school, enjoy the bright costumes, dancing, music and magic of a cabaret show, and the must-see Phuket Siam Niramit Show with songs, dance routines and native martial arts demonstrations. If you enjoy nature, for a few hundred baht, you and your family can enjoy national parks like the Phuket Mangrove and Koh Panyee.
