Phuket Travel Information Guide

Phuket (Thai formerly known as Tha-Laang or Talang, or Junk Ceylon in Western sources, a distortion of the Malay Tanjung Salang, i.e. "Cape Salang")[1] is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. Neighbouring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi, but as Phuket is an island there are no land boundaries.

Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, is Thailand's largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by a bridge. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. The region has an area of approximately 570sq. km. and is made up of 1 large and 39 small islands. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber.[citation needed] The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign trader's ship logs. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.

Loy Krathong 2009 in Phuket

Phuket Festival - Loy Krathong 2009 in Phuket

With a full moon shining down upon the world, with thousands of flickering candles, floating away, the rivers and streams, on lakes and ponds, the people around Phuket Khongkha pay their respects to the goddess of water. The festival is on the full moon of the 12th Month in the Thai lunar calendar, which means normally take place in November.

Every year on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, Thai people in Phuket call on the water spirits and let their troubles drift away down the water in krathongs. A mass of krathongs floats along in almost every outdoor water source available.

Krathongs, often made of banana leaves, carry candles and incense sticks on their long journey downstream. By morning most of Phuket's krathongs will have washed ashore and be congregated in large groups of used-up offerings, but for one night, those little floating objects get their moment to shine as part of Thailand's Loy Krathong, the Festival of Light.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival : 18 - 26 October 2009

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestow good fortune upon those who religiously observe this rite. During this time, local residents of Chinese ancestry strictly observe a 10-day vegetarian or vegan diet for the purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. Sacred rituals are performed at various Chinese shrines and temples and aesthetic displays such as walking barefooted over hot coals and ascending ladders with bladed rungs are performed by entranced devotees known as "Ma Song".

Phuket Waterfalls

Guide to All Phuket Waterfalls

Waterfalls are certainly not one of Phuket's highlights. There are three significant falls on the island but none of them is very large or spectacular. However, they are pleasant spots where you can while away a couple of hours. And the journey to find them is half the fun.

The falls are at their best from June to November with September and October being the best months. During the dry season, they dry up to nothing more than a trickle.

All the falls have small drop pools where it is possible to take a plunge into the refreshing cool water. There are no leaches or other unpleasant fauna. They offer a rainy season alternative to playing in the sea.

Guide to All Phuket Temples

'Wat' is the Thai word for temple. There are many wats in Phuket and foreign visitors are always welcome. 95% of Thais are Buddhist and most of them have great respect for their religion. It is common for Thais to visit their local temple for special occasions or just to make merit. Thai Buddhist temples are very striking with their bright gold and red colours and ornate spires. Inside you will find Buddha images and other artifacts. In Phuket, around a quarter of the population is Muslim and there are as many mosques as temples. Muslims may have been getting a bad press recently but the Muslims in Phuket are a friendly bunch. Most mosques in Phuket will welcome foreign visitors but you should ask permission to enter first and not go if any ceremony is taking place. You must dress modestly, especially women.
