Picking Blackberries

Picking Blackberries for Health and Pleasure

Picking blackberries on a sunny Autumn day is a great family activity. Blackberries are packed with taste and vitamins and normally in great abundance a true gift of nature. Of course it's best to let younger or unwilling children play but as a desk worker I find it very satisfying and relaxing to gradually fill my basket with a heap of gleaming black treasure.

There's nothing more relaxing or satisfying than picking Blackberries on a glorious Fall weekend indeed there's something almost spiritual about it.

My favorite recipe for Blackberries is Blackberry Crumble with custard or ice cream, but see many more below

All About Blackberries

The blackberry is an edible fruit produced by any of several species in the Rubus genus of the Rosaceae family. The fruit is not a true berry; botanically it is termed an aggregate fruit. The plants typically have biennial canes and perennial roots. Blackberries and raspberries are also called caneberries or brambles. It is a widespread, and well known group of over 375 species (quote Wikipedia)

Blackberry Picking Tips

  • Even though it may be hot you need good protective anti-bramble shoes
  • You need several communal baskets to empty your blackberries in
  • You need plastic backs or smaller baskets for the pickers
  • Bare legs not advisable they will suffer attack from nettles and worse the spikes on brambles
  • Bring a small first-aid kit
  • A picnic of course , plenty to drink
  • There are many varieties of wild blackberries only a few are ideal and easy to pick these have many drupelets
  • The best blackberries are often under branches or leaves so examine your bush from many angles
  • Generally the red berries are unripe and should be left
  • Sun facing bushes will ripen earlier in the season, later on in the season you need to find the bushes facing west.
  • Don't wash blackberries until you are ready to consume as washed berries will spoil quicker
