Pickles the Cat

We adopted (my wife and I) pickles at the tender age of 4 weeks old. We live in Hong Kong and help the local animal protection group by fostering cats and kittens until they find a permanent home.

Over the past 6 years we have fostered about 50 cats and kittens of all shapes, sizes, breeds and temperament. We have fostered kittens as young as 2 weeks old whom we bottle fed for the first week or two.

We became good friends with the local vet and also helped to walk the dogs that were up for adoption.

We adopted Pickles from PALS in Hong Kong which stands for Protection of Animals Lantau South. He was found in a litter dumped on Lantau Island, an outlying island in Hong Kong.

PALS finds stray cats and dogs and gives them homes if they are young and fixes them if they are older, leaving them in their own territory, knowing that others will not breed in that area.

PALS is run by two women who foster kittens and puppies out to families who are willing to help out. For those animals that are not fostered temporarily they are held at a local veterinarian who can hold up to 15 dogs at any time and cats are housed by these two women temporarily until permanent homes are found.

We chose 'Pickles' because he was a bit of a handful and got into trouble a lot - He was a real Pickle!

Pumpkin simply got his name because he was orange in color, so we likened him to a pumpkin!

We also named some of the other kittens that we fostered along the way.

Pickles loves to act like a dog. He fetches hairbands and brings them back to you, he jumps up high in the air to catch toys, and he can open doors by jumping up and turning the handle with his paws.

Most of all, as Pickles grows up, he likes warm cuddles on our laps, massages whenever possible, and hugs from his Dad.

In his spare time, he gets chased around the flat by our Son who is 18 months old.

Pickles loves it at our flat in Hong Kong. Now he has another baby brother to play with, our 18 month old son, who is also adopted!
