Pack a Picnic - Feed an Imagination.
The word picnic brings a different visual to each person. It might be at a picnic table in a park, on a blanket under a tree on a hillside, or it might be a bag of sandwiches in a roadside park during a road trip. In most cases you do need the basics of plate, cups, flatware, and food - may be cold or hot. Compact picnic gear makes it easy to grab that bag of picnic equipment, add a couple things from the fridge and hit the road. I find having a basket or bag ready with the basics makes the entire experience much more spontaneous and fun.

Friends and family gather for a picnic in a public park in Columbus, Ohio, c. 1950In contemporary usage, picnic can be defined simply as a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors (al fresco or En plein air), ideally taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake or with an interesting view and possibly at a public event, and usually in Summer.
Picnics are often family-oriented but can also be an intimate occasion between two people, or a large get-together such as company picnics and church picnics.
On romantic and family picnics a picnic basket and a blanket (to sit or recline on) are usually brought along. Outdoor games or some other form of entertainment are common at large picnics.
Some picnics are a potluck, an entertainment at which each person contributed some dish to a common table for all to share. When the picnic is not also a cookout, the food eaten is rarely hot, instead taking the form of sandwiches, finger food, fresh fruit, salad, cold meats and accompanied by chilled wine or champagne or soft drinks.

The Gaithers are such an inspiration and there music can be an addition to any picnic. The Homecoming picnic of churches in the South is such a tradition. They present it well with music they would sing at a homecoming.
We each have our favorite food to eat when out and about.
But a picnic is a special time to build memories or enjoy time with others as much as the food.
