A Family Favorite

I don't remember exactly when we first played Pictionary. What I do remember is my mom bringing home a first edition game one evening when I was a kid. We had a lot of fun playing the first game, and Pictionary has been a family favorite ever since. Over the years we've accumulated great memories. Lots of funny, inventive and creative drawings. Hilarious wild guesses as well as surprisingly correct ones. We've also learned some new words along the way. Now we have families of our own and the kids love the game too. That's our Pictionary set in the picture, it's given us lots of fun games and hopefully will give us lots more.

What is Pictionary?

Pictionary is like charades, except you draw instead of act. There's a time limit for guessing, so speed is more important than artistic ability. Some really funny drawings and guesses can come up, and that's a big part of the fun. There's also a lot of room for improvisation, like drawing an ear to mean "sounds like". You can also develop your own house rules, for example lengthening the guessing time. This is a board game that is not only very enjoyable but also has a lot of replayability.

Some of our drawings

Here are some actual game drawings. We use each paper for as many rounds as we can so there are a lot of drawings on each sheet. Some answers are obvious, some not so much, and others are indecipherable!

Some of the answers are "top hat", "carpenter" and "extinct".

I'm not sure but the answers I can remember from these are "pipe" and "desk".

Photobucket

"Mosquito" and "socket" and others I can't remember. I think one of them is "scatter".

Pictionary First Edition

The Classic Game

Get the classic game on eBay! I don't think this edition is available in stores anymore. Buy it while it lasts!

This game builds vocabulary!

We are a family of geeks. We love learning new things. Here are some words we learned from Pictionary:

udder - This word came out in one of our first games. We had no idea what it was.
stiletto - I didn't know what this meant, but I did know it was the name of a vehicle in the G.I. Joe comics.
Norfolk Broads - I thought this was a group of women. It's actually a beautiful wetland area in Britain.

I'll add to this list as I remember more words.

Pictionary Second Edition

The follow-up to the hit board game. More words, more fun!

One of my neighborhood friends had this set. If I remember correctly, it plays exactly like the first edition, except with different words.

My funniest Pictionary moment was when I was sixteen, and my friend's family and mine were playing Pictionary after Christmas dinner. Her grandmother drew the word "climax" ... I think us teenagers were the most embarrassed :)
