Valentine's Day Books Are Fun!

Every Valentine's Day on Feb. 14th, we celebrate by giving flowers, candy and cards to those we love. There are several legends about why we do this. One legend dates back to the third century during Roman times when Claudius II was Emperor and decided that soldiers should not marry. Valentine was a priest who would secretly marry the soldiers and their brides, but when Claudius found out, he had Valentine killed. Another legend tells the story of a prisoner named Valentine fell in love with his jailer's daughter and before he was executed he wrote a letter to her and signed it "Your Valentine." Children will enjoy these sweet and sometimes hilariously funny stories about celebrating Valentine's Day!

Love, Splat, by Rob Scotton

In this follow up story to Splat the Cat, Splat is smitten by a classmate named Kitten who is white with green eyes. Splat like her even "more than fish sticks and ice cream." But she doesn't seem to like him. She always ties his tail and pokes his belly when she sees him.Even so he prepares a special Valentine for her, but when he gets to school, he finds that Spike, a tough cat in a striped jersey, is a rival for her affection, and has an even bigger Valentine for her, so he throws his in the trash. Luckily, Kitten see it and is able to retrieve it. Will she return either of their affections? Read this cute story to find out.

Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff

This is a very simple board book for toddlers and preschoolers. But if you are a fan of Laura Numeroff's "If you give a Mouse a..." series, you will probably love this book. Mouse wants to make valentines for all his friends. Using glitter, construction paper and glue, Mouse makes his valentines expressing what he loves about each of his friends. For example, he loves Pig because Pig loves to dance. As he finishes up his cards, there is a knock on his door and guess what? All his friends are at his door to express how much they love him. This is a really adorable book.

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch, by Eileen Spinelli

This is one of my favorite Valentine books. In this warmhearted tale, Mr. Hatch is a boring, uninteresting man who does the same things over and over, going to work in the shoe lace factory, eating the same lunch every day, and being lonely. Then one Valentine's Day a giant candy-filled heart is delivered to Mr. Hatch with a note that reads, "Somebody loves you." Just the thought that someone is thinking of him makes Mr. Hatch come alive. Suddenly he is interacting with his neighbors and co-workers trying to figure out who his secret admirer is. This completely changes him. But then the mailman comes back to say that the delivery was a mistake. What will Mr. Hatch do now? Will he revert back to the dull person he was before?

Froggy's First Kiss, by Jonathan London

In this fifth book in the Froggy series, London has another winner. Froggy fall in love with Frogilina, the prettiest frog he'd ever seen and "when she smiled at him his insides got all soft and wiggly, like he'd had caterpillars for breakfast." But it seems every time he is distracted by her charms, he ends up bonking his head. Ouch! Finally, Frogilina gives him his first kiss, a"big juicy...KISS! Smack on his cheek!" But it is too much for him and he ends up retreating to the safety of home and his mother. This is a great read aloud.

Clifford's First Valentine's Day, by Norman Bridwell

This is the story of Clifford as a small puppy on his first Valentine's Day. Emily Elizabeth is making a Valentine for her Grandma, and Clifford wants to make one too. While Emily Elizabeth is cutting her heart out of construction paper, Clifford the puppy is chewing his with his teeth. Then they have to paste, and Clifford ends up with paste all over him. What a mess! Emily Elizabeth puts Clifford in her pocket for the journey to the post office to mail the valentine, but oh no, Clifford slips down the mail chute. Although Clifford makes lots of messes and gets in trouble, Emily Elizabeth is very patient with him and takes good care of him. After all, he is only a puppy!

Queen of Hearts, by Mary Engelbreit

Ann Estelle is back for one of her favorite holidays, Valentine's Day! Her class is getting ready by decorating boxes to put their valentines in and Ann Estelle wants hers to be the very best. It will have glitter, lace, feathers, and even wheels and be the most unique in the class. But she has gotten so involved in her project that she has forgotten one very important thing--to make cards for her classmates. So at the last minute, she ends up giving away parts of her box, a flower to Gracie, feathers to Audrey Ann, a ribbon for Mrs. McGilligan's hair. By the end of the day, her box is back to plain, but is filled with valentines from her friends!

“A hundred hearts would be too few
To carry all my love for you.
~Author Unknown”

Happy Valentine's Day, Little Critter! by Mercer Mayer

Kids will love this special Little Critter lift-the-flaps book. Little Critter and his class are getting ready for Valentine's Day by doing all the usual things like decorating the classroom with hearts, eating cupcakes, and making Valentine's Day mailboxes. On the page where the mail boxes are opened, Little Critter checks to see if he "got" any cards in his box " . . . and guess what? (lift-the-flap) I DID." At the end of the story, Little Critter gives his extra special valentine he made during recess to an extra special person. Guess who that is?

Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink, by Diane deGroat

Gilbert has to write valentine poems for each of his classmates because his teacher says that Valentine's Day is about liking each other. He enjoys making up rhymes for each of his classmates until he gets to Lewis, who tweaked Gilbert's nose, and Margaret, who teased him about his glasses. So he makes not nice rhymes on their cards ("Roses are red, you wet your bed, I think that you have rocks in your head" ), and then signs Lewis's name to Margaret's valentine and vice-versa. Oh course, when neither receives a card with Gilbert's name, his prank is discovered and the other kids ostracize him. But then all three apologize and Gilbert writes them new poems and shares his homemade cookies and all is forgiven.
