What is a Picture Disc Record Album?

A picture disc record album is a vinyl record that has a picture embedded into the clear vinyl. The picture disc pictured here is David Bowie's Pin Ups album. The picture on this picture disc is an exact duplicate of the original Pin Ups album cover.

Most picture discs are made that way. They are copies of the album covers but some have different pictures on their flip sides. Others have different pictures entirely.

If you look closely, you will see the hole in the center of the picture disc, just at the side of David Bowie's cheek, for the record player pin to fit through.

Most picture discs are round (like a record baby) but some are oddly shaped.

No matter what pictures, or shapes, they contain, all picture disc record albums can be played on a record player.

Many picture discs were released as promo albums making them rare commodities for collectors.

Important Advice About Collecting Picture Discs

Don't Play Them!

When you decide to become a serious picture disc record album collector, remember, playing your records will cause them to scratch and scratched records aren't worth as much when it comes to resale value.

In any case, picture disc record albums are produced more for their looks. Their sound quality isn't up to par with regular black vinyl records and they don't even come close to sounding like today's compact discs.

Hang 'em For All the World to See

The best, and most fun, way to display your picture disc collection is to frame them. By hanging them up you can see them on a daily basis and easily show them off to all your friends.

There are several options when it comes to framing your picture discs. You can bring them to a professional framer who will custom cut a mat background and then frame your disc. This could get expensive if you have a large collection of picture disc record albums but I would definitely recommend it for your most prized picture discs.

Another way to display your picture discs is to find already made regular picture frames that are sized for record albums. Keep in mind that a regular album is 12 inches round so you need to buy a square frame that is at least that wide. They are available but not very popular so if you find one, grab it! I've used this method and am always on the lookout for square frames sized 12 or 13 inches wide.

They do sell frames made specifically for record album covers. These are definitely sized right but when you've got such a pretty record, you really don't want to cover it with it's album cover. This method works well when your picture disc still has it's original album cover that has a precut hole in it to display the pic disc. The only problem you might encounter is that record album cover picture frames usually don't have glass fronts, so if your disc's cover isn't made of clear plastic, your album won't have any protection from dust and damage.

To help with this problem, you can buy clear vinyl or plastic record sleeves (covers) and put those on before framing.

You can also just use those plastic covers to protect and hang your picture discs and skip the frames entirely. This would be the least expensive way to display your discs.

If your handy with wood and tools you might try making your own frames!

The one thing I find funny about collecting picture disc record albums is that I don't seem to run into all that many people who collect them until I place a bid on one at ebay. Then the sky opens and a million other collectors jump in on my bid! Oh well, it wouldn't be as much fun winning one if it were too easy. I guess the challenge adds to the thrill! And trust me, I've won my fair share of the battles.

I started my collection back in 1982. My first picture disc was David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and I still have it. I have to say that once I got into ebay, my picture disc collection grew tremendously. I still buy mostly David Bowie but I've got many others. One of my prized discs is by Bauhaus and it features pictures of Bela Lugosi dressed in his full Dracula regalia.

I would love to find out the value of some of my picture discs! I have 2 in particular... One full record of the Doors (interview) and a set of 4 "45"s of the interviews with each Beatle. Can you help me locate a pricing guide?

I would love to say I am too young to remember .. . ALL of these when they 1st came out, but, that would be a huge lie! I loved my pictures discs I had a bright red LP of ska music and Fun Boy 3. This is a fab and indeed groovy (sorry couldn't resist) lens. Really, enjoyed it. Thank you

Hi! You have a wonderful and informative sight! It's been a great deal of fun looking around. I have a question and I hope you can help me with it. Several years ago I saw 2 picture discs on Ebay. One depicted a single white rose in a dark background. The other, a pink rose in the same setting. Both records were framed in a soft light and were by the same band. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
