Where Is Belize?
Belize, in the very north of Central America, forms part of the western shore of the Caribbean Sea.The independent nation - circled in red on the map to the right - is just to the south of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and is bordered on the west and south by Guatemala.
Ambergris Caye (pronounced like "key"), just off the northern coast of Belize is very popular with divers and snorkelers in the know, while the nearby 407-ft deep Great Blue Hole is on every diver's bucket list.

Some Facts About Belize
Just off the coast is the Belize Barrier Reef, which, at 199 miles long is the longest barrier reff in the Western Hemisphere. Only one other barrier reef in the world surpasses it in lenght, and that is, of course, Australia's Great Barrier Reef.Belize is the only nation in Central America whose oficial language is English.
Belize, formerly kown as British Honduras, declared independence from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1981.
Neighboring Guatemala did not recognize the new nation of Belize for some 11 years, and there is still a dispute between the two countries over the border.
Several hundred small islands (called Cayes) line the coast.
Belize has the largest cave system in Central America
The National Tree of Belize is the Mahogany Tree
Native to Belize, the Baird's Tapir, is the largest land mamal in Central America, and the country's national animal.

Independence Day in Belize
September 21
Why? Because September 21 is Independence Day in Belize, and I'm glad I stayed on land that day.
In Belize Dity that day, I felt like I was in a wonderful old movie. No gaudy glitz. Simple, genuine national pride, and lots of congenial celebrating.
There were food vendors, happy people milling abou, speeches, and a parade. The picture is of children from one of the schools assembling to march in the parade. Each contigent had on the uniform of their shool. Everyone was spiffed up, every uniform starched and pressed.
There were big, smiling policemen. I must tell you, that it seemed like only the biggest, tallest guys in the whole country are allowed on the police force. My daughter got permission to take my picture with one of them, and he TOWERED over me!
It was a fun day!

Average Annual Rainfall: Vaies greatly the farther south you go - with the north of the country usually getting less than 70", and the farthest south portions twice that much or more

Hunidity is much higher on and near the coast, but frequent tradewinde mitigate the effect of the high humidity.

- Hi I'm glad you have this lens up in time for my Mother's Day quest, you see my mom is currently living in Belize ( somewhere near Corezal Town). She loves it. We researched it for a few years before she drove down the first time. She loves that they speak English, the currency is dollar based, there are lots of ripe fruit trees everywhere, and she can walk to the beach. She sends me killer post cards (usually in deep winter up here-its nice there except hurricane season) anyways the postcards have Massive flowers on them, and everything looks lovely there. She once bought a bag of oranges there almost as big as her for $8.00. yeah so she digs it. Also amazing fish there. She sometimes misses turkey because they don't really have that, but other than that she's good. I haven't heard from her in a while, guess its my turn to write. Anyways thank you. Nice lens.

- I thought I might make it to Belize, but not sure I will get the chance in my lifetime. I've loved the place and contemplated it as a retirement spot. Particularly love the beach cabana.

- I have always wan't to go to Belize and love to see photos and read info about the place. I liked your spin on the country and am sorry that the video "Mayan Ruins in Belize" is no longer available. Perhaps you could find a new one to replace it. Even though, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and I'm leaving you with an *Angel Blessing* for a job well done! This lens is also the 1st one to be featured in the "Travel & Places ยป Central America" neighborhood of My Squid Angel Blessings 2012 lens. Aloha!

- You didn't have an answer for me on the first poll, since I have been to Belize, but don't/didn't live there, and didn't go on vacation. I spent a week there working in Belize City, but unfortunately didn't have time to visit the reef and do any diving, or to see the Mayan Ruins.
The first time I passed through, in transit to El Salvador I think it was, the airport runway was lined with Rapier anti-aircraft missiles and the terminal was an old building in much need of repair. The next time I flew in, they had a brand new terminal and the missile systems had been removed, showing the decrease in British military presence there.
