Pictures of Morkies: What do Morkies Look Like?
Both the parent dogs are small, cute and have long, silky hair. The Yorkie is a terrier, so is more aggressive than the Maltese, and the Yorkie has stand-up, pointed ears. The Maltese, in comparison has floppy, 'spaniel' type ears.
And of course, the big difference: the Yorkshire Terrier is black and brown while the Maltese is pure white.
So the Morkie puppies can be any combination of colours, including a blended beige or light brown. And the Morkie puppy's ears can be up or down. But one thing you can count on: this little dog is a great companion for you and your family and will bring years of joy.
In this lens, I'll share as many pictures as I can find of Morkies, to show you just how different they can look from one another.
What IS a Morkie anyway?
One Yorkshire Terrier parent plus one Maltese parent = Morkie puppies
Morkies, like Labradoodles or Schnoodles, are the result of breeding one purebred dog with a different type of purebreed. So in this case, a Yorkshire Terrier is bred with a Maltese dog.The result is a small, affectionate and very cute little dog that's:
- good for people with allergies (both parent breeds have hair, not fur)
- ideal for apartment living (the typical Morkie is anywhere from 4 to 8 lbs.)
- good with (older) children
- a great companion for anyone
What are Morkies like?
The Morkie's temperament

To understand Morkies, you need to get to know the parent breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier and the Maltese. Many of their characteristics will be passed along to their offspring.
The Yorkie
- bred in the 1850s to chase rats
- a terrier - so can be aggressive and needs to be active
- very smart, friendly, loyal
The Maltese
- first bred as a lapdog for palaces, about 6,000 years ago
- affectionate and loyal
- gentle, sweet-natured
Crossing the two breeds is no guarantee your Morkie will be 50/50 Yorkie and Maltese, but a mixture of both breeds is likely to:
- 'tone down' or 'calm down' the more aggressive side of the Yorkie Terrier
- make the Maltese side a little more active
- ensure your little dog will be friendly, affectionate and loyal
Morkies grow to be about 4 to 8 pounds

Morkies are easy to exercise - a walk a day does it!

Some Morkie owners keep their dog's coat short - in a puppy cut
It's easy to look after and looks cute

A little beige Morkie
All Ready for Christmas

This little Morkie's coat combines the black, brown and white coats of its parents into a beautiful beige and white mix, with just a touch of grey.
No matter the colour, the Morkie is one of the dogs called "hypo-allergenic" because they shed very little. Morkies, like their parent Yorkies and Maltese dogs, have HAIR not fur. Fur tends to have two layers - and that underneath, downy-soft layer is what sheds all the time on most dogs. (Believe me I know, with our Golden Retriever)
The Morkie's hair does shed or fall out a little - except a little during combing. In this way, it's just like our hair.
A well defined black-and-white Morkie
Morkies come in many colour combinations
Morkies can be a solid colour combination of black, brown and white, or a blend.Although Maltese dogs are born pure white and stay white, Yorkies change colours as they grow. Typically a Yorkshire Terrier puppy is pure black and then develops what experts call a "steel grey" colour to its coats on its back. Gradually, the Yorkie's characteristic brown colours grow in around the face, underside and under the tail
Ears - standing up or floppy?
Your Morkie could have either

Another big difference
.....between Yorkies and Maltese is their ears.Kennel Clubs around the world have actually classified 44 different shapes for dog ears (you can read more on my Lens about Yorkie Ears.)
The Yorkshire Terrier ears stand up, in triangular shape while the Maltese ears flop. The stand up or in dog parlance prick ears are usually trimmed across the top, with a clipper or blunt end scissors:

If your Morkie has stand-up ears, trim them like this, from Yorkies for Dummies at Amazon
Trim the top half of the ears - front and back - right down.
