Like many pictures of the sun, this one shows a glowing sun dipping beneath the cloud darkened sky, putting an early end to the day. The placid waters shimmer with it's light. This photograph, captured by James Saenz was apparently taken in Guilin, a city in China. Presumably, this was taken on the waters of the Li River.

This is one of the more unusual pictures of the sun. It's masked by a thin layer of clouds disguising it's intensity and creating an eerie glow that silhouettes some passing Sandhill Cranes. This image was captured by photographer Aruther Morris in Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Reserve in New Mexico, USA. It's a 57,000 + acre refuge in the Rio Grande Valley.

A sunset picture taken on the Masai Mara Game Preserve in Kenya shows a vulture gliding across the sky. The national preserve is a very popular destination for safari travellers. This photograph was taken by Joe Restuccia III.

The massive trees in this photograph are the first to greet the sunrise which comes sifting through the surrounding mist. This photograph was taken in Glen Affric in Scotland. There is a national reserve here and an ancient pine forest. Niall Benvie captured this shot.

Aptly named, Sunset Cliffs is the setting for this photograph. The image shows the silhouette of a seagull resting by the tidepools and looking out at the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California. Christopher Talbot Frank is the photographer.

The setting sun in this picture has transformed the sky into a glowing orange canopy over the placid waters. The lush palm in the foreground lends a sense of paradise this scene in Aitutaki Lagoon, Cook Islands.

This shot, taken by photographer Jochen Schlenker, show the sun over the river Derwent in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Another glorious sunrise. This one off of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, pierces the remnants of the morning fog and warms the entire scene. Photographer Chuck Haney captured this image.

Many pictures of the sun capture it in it's muted tones of sunset or only partial emergence at sunrise, but this image is more daring. It shows the sun in it's full glory over the mountains in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

The remains of the day; this shows the sun in it's final moments over the Big Island of Hawaii. Photographer Keith Levit captured this scene.

As so many pictures of the sun do, this one shows the dazzling beauty of a sunset reflecting off of the water and casting a glow across the expanse of the sky. This image was taken near Arpoador Beach on Cagaras Island, near Rio de Janiero Brazil. Silvestre Machado is the photographer.

Photographer David Davis captured this sunset scene on Paurotis Pond in the Everglades National Park in Florida; a subtropical wilderness and wetland.

The heavy clouds in this image create a very special picture of the sun. Without the radiating beams, the reflection off the water, or even the multicolored display in the sky that is typical in most images of a sunset, this one nonetheless captures a breathtaking view. It merely gives a hint of the power and beauty of this celestial body.
Marck Moritsch took this picture at Shell Beach.

This photograph captures a sunset over the Pacific Ocean. This one was taken around Big Sur, California and gives a view of the marine layer which has formed over the water.

This is another picture of the sun which captures the colorful display created when the setting sun casts it's final rays on the ocean and the sky. This image was taken in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

A beautiful sunrise in Canyonlands National Park near Sunrise Mesa, Utah is shown in this photograph.
