The smiley, smiley face, or happy face, represents a smiling human face. It's normally portrayed with two dots for eyes, and a half circle for the mouth in a yellow circle background. The happy face has graduated to the "smiley", a term used to describe the online emoticon.
Here's an interesting "tidbit" about when the "happy face" may have actually been first invented: Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcestor, Massachusetts devised the face in 1963 for an insurance company that was looking for a marketing campaign to boost it's employees moral. Since Ball didn't promote or trademark the image, it fell into the "public domain" in the US and apparently the only earnings Ball ever made from it was his initial $45 fee.
