What Is A Pie Bird?

Pie birds go by a few names including vent, whistle, funnel or chimney. They are a hollow device often, but not always, in the shape of a bird that is used for venting steam from a baking pie. Measuring from approximately 3 to 5 inches, they feature a hole at the top for steam to escape through. They have become increasingly popular as gifts and collector's items in recent years. They can be quite affordable with new and used ones selling under $10 or they can be quite expensive. A check today shows the highest priced vent selling on eBay in the last 90 days sold for $256.

This page is PACKED with pie birds of all types in many different price ranges. You will find some pretty amazing beautiful pictures and links to more reading about the history and collecting of pie birds. Thank you to the photographers who have decided to share the great photos on this page. I hope you enjoy reading this page and that it helps you find the pie bird you are searching for!

Wow! I really learned something from your great lens! I'm not much of a pie baker - only pumpkin pies. I received a pie set with the bird several years ago. I had no idea what the bird was for and I recently threw it away because it just sat in my drawer for years! Wish I had known! I have the Winter Berry Dishes and am going to buy that pie plate and Cardinal to go with my set - now that I know what to do with the bird! Thanks!
