Goddards pie and mash
The Goddard's Pie and Mash business was founded in 1890 by Alfred Goddard in Evelyn Street, Deptford, London.
The original pieshop
Alfred passed the business to his two sons Robert (Bob) and George in 1936. In 1952, another shop was opened in Greenwich at the same time as the Cutty Sark was placed in dry dock.
For a time, pies were cooked in the Deptford shop and transported by van to Greenwich. After a couple of years the two brothers decided to take one shop each and Bob Goddard (our grandfather) took the Greenwich shop while his brother remained in Deptford.
The pie and mash shop in Greenwich is now closed but we do have a mobile pie and mash unit in Greenwich at the weekends!

At some point we hope to be able to provide a wholesale and retail delivery service. But we can still cater for parties and bulk orders right now.

History of pie and mash
Pie and mash can be traced back to the 18th century. The original pies were eel pies. Vendors would visit the fish market very early each morning to buy eels caught straight from the River Thames. They would then travel back home to cook the eels and bake the eel pies. Once ready, they would walk the streets of London selling their freshly baked pies on a tray.
Laterly, the pie filling was changed to minced beef as this became cheaper with mashed potato served on the side of the plate. Here we have the beginnings of pie and mash. Stewed or jellied eels continue to be a popular accompaniment to beef pie and mash.
Many pie and mash shops now offer a range of different pies including steak and kidney and vegetarian options.
