Featured Lure of the Week
Rapala X-Rap XRSB09 Purple Shad
The Rapala X-Rap Purple Shad is subsurface lure with a walk-the-dog action that will trigger an attack from fish. This lure can also be allowed to sink into the pockets where big fish love to ambush prey.

Tips for using your Rapala X-Rap Subwalk Purple Shad
I love fishing for walleye. When fishing for walleye, I like to begin with using crawlers. A dozen or so casts with a crawler should yeild a few bites, but when it doesn't, I always reach for some type of Shad Rap.
One of my favorite shad's is the X-Rap. The best method of fishing the X-Rap Subwalk is to cast the lure out and let it sink. After the lure has gotten a chance to sink, it's time to bring this lure to life. Begin by twitching your rod tip as you start to reel in. This will bring the lure into a walk-the-dog motion just below the surface of the water. Continue twitching the rod tip and reeling right up to the boat. If this method doesn't work on the first cast, don't give up. Recast and try again in a slightly different area of the water, but be ready. When fish attack, especially walleye, you usually only have one shot at hooking them. Walleye are smart, if you give them a chance to feel that hook they'll spit out that lure. Quick reflexes on the part of the fisherman are essential.

An owl as a decoy of the week?
Some of you may be wondering how an owl can be an important hunting tool. I wondered the same thing until I tried crow hunting. Crows are considered nuisance birds. Not only can they be damaging to gardens and cropland, they also ruin bird nests, destroying eggs of other birds. Crow hunting can be fun and in some states you can hunt crow without a license.
Using a raptor, such as an owl, as a decoy stimulates the attack instinct of the crow. Owls and crows are bitter enemies, and a strategically placed owl will draw in crows from miles around. The key to using the owl decoy is to place it on a fence post or the top of a small tree so that it is highly visible. Crows will make a bee-line straight for the decoy as soon as the decoy is spotted. To magnify the affect of the owl decoy, place crow decoys in nearby trees, above the level of the owl. This placement will make the scene more believable to crows who will then be axious to join the fight.

A place for us to offer additional tips or just talk to whoever will listen.
We are nearing the dog days of summer. This is the time of year when things will really slow down. The walley fishing will begin to wane as the summer heat drives the fish to deeper water, and the hunting season is still several months away. The only thing left to do is to clean and oil the fishing reel, maybe hit the woods to begin building tree stands for the upcoming deer hunting season, or like me, spend this time of year drinking beer and preparing the store for new inventory. But all is not lost. Fishing can still be good during the hot summer months. Next week we will offer tips and suggestions for fishing during the summer. In the meantime, feel free to visit our store. Our store's link is listed in the link section of the lens.
