Pierce Butler Plantations

Wealthy rice planter in South Carolina and Georgia, Pierce Butler, owned thousands of acres in McIntosh County near Darien. His selection for a wife was unfortunate because she hated the plantation life. Imagine that! The wife of probably the wealthiest and most prosperous planters of the age offered the actress a lifestyle better than anyone else on the planet. Kemble wrote a book about the life on a Georgia plantation, expressing her disdain. This book sits in the Brunswick Public Library as well as the library on St. Simon's Island, Georgia.

Remains of one of his homes outside of the city of Darien are still available for sightseeing (off the road, that is, at the historical marker).
