What's Going On At P.I.G. Pods?

The P.I.G. Pods team is pleased to announce that its December 2011 edition of P.I.G. Pods is now online. This new edition includes retrospectives on the careers of Billie Holiday and The Allman Brothers Band, as well as several mini-features. All of these special program pages are outlined below. The pages on P.I.G. Pods are run in conjunction with the playlists we present at Spotify. Each month, we cover a wide variety of musical genres. You can also find album reviews at Blue Plate Special, a monthly blog at P.I.G. Pod Chronicles, and a forum at Bustin' Crabs. As modestly as we three, squealing piggies are, we're not afraid to say we think our December edition is a good one!

Sooze Select Slices

Lady Day: The Legendary Billie Holiday

Considered by many to be the greatest jazz vocalist of all time, Billie Holiday lived a tempestuous and difficult life. Her singing expressed an incredible depth of emotion that spoke of hard times and injustice as well as triumph. Though her career was relatively short and often erratic, she left behind a body of work as great as any vocalist before or since. Holiday paid her dues in a demanding environment. That she survived at all is incredible; that she should become the greatest jazz singer there has ever been -- virtually without predecessor or successor -- borders on the miraculous. Any new student coming to popular music or jazz will at some point be directed to the work of Billie Holiday. Unquestionably, they will be moved and, quite certainly, they will be amazed.

Rob's Prime Cuts

The Allman Brothers Band, Tragedy and Triumph

Born out of the young rising career of studio guitarist, Duane Allman, he and his brother Greg formed a dynamic innovative rock band whose career exploded out of Macon, Georgia to worldwide success. Influenced heavily by the great blues masters and southern soul, the Allman Brothers Band became one of the hottest live acts in the industry while turning out superb record albums. Just as the band reached the highest level of success, two band members, Duane Allman, the band's founder and Berry Oakley, their bass player were killed in gruesome motorcycle accidents a year apart, but through tragedy, disillusion, and triumph, the band followed the long road ahead. This installment of Prime Cuts narrates that journey.

Lulu's Luncheonette

Three Days

While digging through her brain for a topic on which to focus this time around, Lulu had a song by k.d. lang pass through the neurons. That song is called "Three Days" and the refrain contains "yesterday, today and tomorrow." Well, never being one to take a thought for granted, she started thinking about doing a playlist of tunes that would fit into those parameters. What she discovered was yesterday, today and tomorrow are pretty big topics in songwriting and provide a rather strange combination of talents when pulled from her music library. Lulu's Luncheonette always places before you a menu to tantalize your tastebuds. You don't need a reservation. Lulu's is always open!

Bubba's Pit Stop

Bubba's Blues/20 Classic Live Albums/Merle Haggard

This month, Bubba brings us another collection of classic music, spread over a wide variety of genres. What universality better defines a big part of the human condition than the blues? On the 'Bubba's Blues' playlist, he's picked some tunes that are guaranteed to excite your "wang dang doodle." Under '20 Classic Live Albums,' he's identified twenty "classic" live albums that have withstood the test of time, sound convincingly realistic, and should be a part of serious music lovers' collections. And finally, who influenced Merle Haggard? Those influences are Bob Wills, 'The Best Damned Fiddle Player in the World,' and Lefty Frizzell, whose work influenced Haggard's approach to both honky-tonk songs and his ballads.

Short Ribs

Bacon Bits: Maynard Ferguson/The Purple Pig Pub: The Civil Wars

In December, our Short Ribs page splits in two. At Bacon Bits, we feature jazz trumpet master, Maynard Ferguson. Ferguson was one of a handful of virtuoso musician/bandleaders to survive the end of the big band era and the rise of rock and roll. He demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt to the musical trends that evolved from the 1940s through the 2000s. Through his devotion to music education in America, Ferguson was able to impart the spirit of his jazz playing and technique to scores of amateur and professional trumpeters. At The Purple Pig Pub, we bring you the contemporary folk music of the singing/songwriting partnership of Joy Williams and John Paul White, known collectively as The Civil Wars.

Served Up Live!

Jimi Hendrix Live At The Fillmore East

Live at the Fillmore East is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix (backed with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles) released on February 23, 1999. The album documents Hendrix's performances with the Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore East on December 31, 1969 and January 1, 1970. It is drawn from the same performances as, and can be seen as an extended alternative to, the Band of Gypsys album.

A P.I.G. Pod Christmas

At: Lulu's Luncheonette/Bubba's Pit Stop/Short Ribs

No December, online publication would be complete without the sounds of the season. At Lulu's Luncheonette, our theme-loving Lulu has prepared a playlist called '12 Days Of Christmas Variety Pack.' At Bubba's Pit Stop, Rob treats us to 'A Bubba Christmas.' Not wanting to be left out, Sooze brings to Short Ribs her own holiday theme called, 'Born On Christmas Day.'
