Pigeon Forge is a hustle and bustle of activity in East Tennessee. With millions of visitors each year, families and groups flock to the many restaurants, shops, and attractions that cover the city. When imagining the busy city of Pigeon Forge, many people would never imagine that it was once covered with rolling wheat fields and thriving farmlands! Pigeon Forge has a unique and interesting history that all visitors (and locals!) should know about.

Cherokee Indians were the original settlers of Pigeon Forge. They used the valley for hunting and fishing grounds, even forging a trail that crosses the Great Smoky Mountains into North Carolina. Now named Indian Gap Trail, the path was found by Euro-American settlers, who built a fort that provided a safe place for other traveling pioneers. Upon the Cherokee signing of Treaty of Dumplin Creek in 1785, the land we now known as Sevier County was seized.

In 1810, Revolutionary War veteran Mordecai Lewis gained a 151 acre tract of land now known as Pigeon Forge. Where did the name come from, you ask? The "pigeon" in Pigeon Forge came from what else - pigeons! When the early settlers arrived in the Pigeon Forge area, they were greeted by thousands of passenger pigeons - enough to darken the sky when they took flight! The "forge" in Pigeon Forge came from Issac Love's iron forge he built in 1820 - which still stands at the site of the Old Mill.

Until the opening of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934, Pigeon Forge remained a quiet, uncommercialized town. Once the park opened, Tennessee officials began to see a need for tourism in Pigeon Forge. Grover and Harry Robbins opened Rebel Railroad in 1961, a railroad ride that simulated a Confederate railcar under attack by Union soldiers during the Civil War. The park was renamed Goldrush Junction after the war and then Silver Dollar City after being brought by Cleveland Brown's owner Art Modell. The park underwent several changes before becoming what we know today as the famous Dollywood!

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is now home to 5,000 residents and attracts millions of visitors every year. With famous landmark restaurants, such as the Old Mill or the Apple Barn, and fun annual events, such as Rod Run and Saddle Up!, Pigeon Forge is now a place that offers fun for the whole family. A new show is coming to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The McGraw and Dawson families (two lumberjacking groups) get in a feud when the President announces he's shutting down all lumberjacking in the Smokies. The two families are forced to fight over the last remaining lumber and have agreed on a showdown at the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee logging jamboree - or so the story goes.

The feud between the lumberjack families in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee will take place in a dinner theatre environment. The athletes featured in the lumberjack show are ESPN timber athletes who will show off many tricks that will dazzle you. From chainsaw carving to log chopping and rolling, tree climbing, axe throwing, and boom running. There are also some animals highlighted in the show including dogs that jump in water and horses skidding logs.

Of course the audience will be pitted against eachother too. Half will be placed on the McGraw side and the other half on the Dawson side. But watch out, Dan and Molly are from enemy families and by the end of the show you'll see that their love may bring the feuding to a halt, or maybe not.

Rob Scheer (a lumberjacking world champion) will be president of the attraction and his team's efforts along with the efforts of Lumberjack Sports International will make the lumberjacking feud show happen. The team plans on having a history center inside of the entrance area of the show that will feature memorabilia, pictures, and information on lumberjacking, the Smokies, and the 1930's.

July 2011

3rd:4th of July Midnight Parade: Celebrate Independence Day with the country's first parade! Begins on the Gatlinburg Parkway at the stroke of midnight.
4th:21st Annual Patriot Festival: Celebrate the 4th of July with food, fun and entertainment. Games, concert and fireworks take place at Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge.
17th:Dolly Parton Kick-Off Tour Concert: This will be the first time in 26 years Dolly has performed a local show outside of Sevierville. Get your tickets early!
22nd-23rd:George Jones Concert: This country legend will be performing at the Country Tonite Theater at 8PM in Pigeon Forge. Tickets will sell out!

Locals and tourists alike flock to Pigeon Forge every year for the annual Saddle Up! Festival. This three day festival is part of Pigeon Forge's Winterfest, a three month long event showcasing Pigeon Forge during the chilly winter months - offering visitors displays of holiday lights, music, and other special events. The award winning Saddle Up! Festival showcases the American West and offers visitors a chance to experience cowboy poetry, cooking, entertainment, and much more!

This year, the eleventh annual Saddle Up! Festival rolled into town on February 24th-27th. Guests were treated to a wide variety of cowboy music, beginning with an intimate dinner and performance by Wylie and the Wild West. Wylie and his crew are known throughout the nation - you've probably heard his voice featured on the famous "Yahoo!" yodel. A recent guest on the Late Night Show with Conan O'Brien, tickets to Wylie's show were sold out within days. The dinner and performance was held at the Partridge Restaurant, where guests enjoyed a delectable dinner of turkey and dressing, glazed ham, and crab stuffed tilapia - yum!

Other featured events included the much anticipated Chuck Wagon Cook-off. Six authentic chuckwagons rolled into Pigeon Forge Saturday morning and began preparing to showcase their unique recipes. For the competition, each chuckwagon team had to prepare chicken-fried steaks, potatoes, beans, bread, cornbread and fruit cobblers. They were then judged on each type of food, as well as the authenticity of their chuckwagons. Visitors enjoyed sampling one of a kind food straight of the Wild West.

There were countless other performances, shopping experiences, events, and fun at this year's 11th Annual Saddle Up! Festival. Next time you're planning your vacation to Pigeon Forge, don't forget that there's fun to be had all year round!
