With pigeon racing, its not the distance covered that is measured but the velocity at which it was covered. Because the pigeons can't be told to navigate to a particular destination point other than the one they've been trained to, the race measures the speed in which a pigeon can return to its loft. Races are generally between 100 and 1000 km in distance.

Once the pigeons are released from a particular point, they all fly back to their own lofts. When a bird migrates back to its loft, the time is recorded by a special clock. This clock is taken to the judges to record the flight time. The distance from point A to point B is used to calculate the speed in which the pigeon made it home. The fastest pigeon is then named the winner.

The traditional method for timing pigeons involves a rubber ring tied to the pigeons leg with a unique serial number and a specially designed racing clock. The serial number is recorded, and the clock is then set and sealed for the pigeon to carry the ring home. When the bird returns, its fancier removes the ring and puts it in the clock. The time that the ring was inserted into the clock is recorded as the official time that the pigeon found its way home. An average speed is measured from this timestamp and the winner of the race is found.

The latest preferred method for timing racing pigeons involves the Electronic Timing System. The pigeon's arrival will be recorded automatically. While using the electronic system, the fancier does not even have to be at the loft to clock the birds as they return. The pigeons are fitted with a band that has a RFID chip in it which will be read when the pigeon returns home. The electronic scanning records the pigeons arrival when it returns to the loft. The antenna is placed at the entry to the loft entrance and when the bird passes it the electronic band is scanned. The serial number of the transponder ring is recorded at the time of arrival.
