What is there to like about a pig?

Pigs are not only good for eating, they also make wonderful pets! People who know them say they are intelligent, loyal and friendly. And, believe it or not, they are very clean! The pictures will illustrate how very cute pigs are.
To honor pigs, some people celebrate Pig's Day, on March 1st. Others spend their time and resources protecting pigs from cruelty. Also, have a look at a micro pig, or tea cup pig, so very small.

National Pig Day

March 1st

National Pig Day is an event held annually on March 1 in the United States to celebrate the pig. The holiday celebration was started in 1972 by two sisters. According to one of them, the purpose of National Pig Day is "to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals."

On National Pig Day there are many events around the United States, all to celebrate the pigs. There are also many "pig parties" where pork is served in a lot of different flavors and shapes. This has led to the discussion as to whether Pig's Day is there to honor pigs, or to eat them. Judge for yourself.

Micro pigs, Mini Juliana

Can you imagine a pig smaller than 14"? It is a very popular, special breed. Actually there are many different varieties, and people call them by different names. Celebrities, such as the Beckham's, have contributed to the popularity of these pigs. They don't come in cheap- people pay hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars to get a really small piglet!
These little pigs were originally bred on the Pennywell farm in the UK. It took many years to develop them to their present size.

Yellow Pig Day

July 17th

Yellow Pig Day is a mathematician's holiday celebrating yellow pigs (is there such a thing!?!), and the number 17. It is celebrated annually since the early 1960's, primarily on college campuses, and primarily by mathematicians. On campus, Yellow Pig Cake and Yellow Pig Carols are tradition!

The Yellow Pig was the brainstorm of mathematicians Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly in the early 1960's. They were students at Princeton University, studying mathematics. History was made as they were listing interesting properties of the number 17 (can you imagine the interesting properties!?). During this thought wave, the yellow pig was born. Most likely, it had 17 toes, 17 teeth, 17 eyelashes, etc. The yellow pig and the number 17 have been linked ever since.

What Do Pigs Eat?

Pigs actually eat anything, they like foraging the ground for worms, dead leaves,or even garbage. On farms, they often eat grains such as corn, wheat, oats or barley. In addition to this, farm pigs are also given greens and special dry pig-food made from meat. Additional vitamins and minerals are usually added.

I've never considered a pig for a pet. Something to think about.

My husband had a pet pig when he was a boy... but he grew up on a farm, so that was not unusual, even WAY back then.

I'm not much on having a pig as a pet but some of those pigs in the pics above are sorta cute (especially this last pic above). I also don't do pork food much at all, but I do enjoy a nice tasty barbecue pulled pork sandwich every now and again. Mmmm! Nice lens!!
