Review of Pilates Reformer - What is the Pilates Reformer?

The Pilates Reformer is one of the four main Pilates equipment invented by its founder, Joseph Pilates. The Pilates Reformer was created during the First World War when Joseph Pilates was interned at a camp in England. There he discovered a method that tied springs to hospital beds to help patients who had ailing limbs regain their strength. His method brought about successful results and soon he began to develop other Pilates equipment.

This lens will review the Pilates Reformer and highlights its purpose, features and our overall comments on the benefits of this Pilates equipment.

Purpose of the Pilates Reformer

The Pilates Reformer is by far the most popular Pilates equipment. It looks like a modified rowing trainer and is designed with a sliding carriage that ties to one end of the frame with springs.

The purpose of this equipment is to improve postural alignment, develop flexibility and improve cardiovascular fitness. Basically, the main idea is to build strong arms and legs through a series of stretching routine, much like rowing movements. The Pilates Reformer gives a good cardio workout for high performance athletes.

Features of the Pilates Reformer

You need to know what features the Pilates Reformer boasts of before getting one. This equipment comprises a variety of pulley system that allows you to adjust the resistance level to suit your fitness condition. The most obvious feature is the long bench-like platform which is basically the base where the springs are attached to. The platform is padded with a comfortable cushion to support the body.

There are 5 reformer springs, 2 push-through springs, 2 roll-down springs, 2 arm springs and 2 leg springs for the stretching and resistance exercises. The Pilates Reformer is made of steel with wood accent highlights.

What We Say on the Pilates Reformer

Here's Our Take

The Pilates Reformer allows for a multi purpose exercise due to the size, build-up and varied features. Apart from reformer exercises, you can choose to perform mat routines and cadillac exercises on it. This equipment is useful for sport-specific athletes and cross-training movements as it strengthens your muscles and improves your cardiovascular fitness. The best part is you won't be building any bulky muscles in the process. Believe me, the stretching exercises are not easy initially and it takes time to recondition your body to the routine. The cardio activity is enormous and you will build strength and stamina as you go along.

The reformer has been widely used as a rehabilitation equipment for joint injuries, in line with the original purpose that Joseph Pilates intended. This proves that the reformer has stood the test of time and will continue to dominate the fitness scene.

The Pilates Reformer is affordable for this incredibly versatile equipment and truly worth the buy. It is suitable to be used even for Pilates beginners.
