- Make sure you buy a DVD suitable for the level of experience you have. Their is no point buying an advanced workout DVD if you are a beginner. Not only would you not be able to do the exercises but the chances of you injuring yourself increase dramatically.
- Try and find somewhere you can check on your own form whilst your doing the exercises. A gym with a set of full sized mirrors is best but any large mirror can be useful.
- Get a friend to watch you doing the exercises. If your friend watches the DVD she can tell you if you look anything like the person demonstrating the exercise and point out where you look different.
- Go to a class. I know you bought the DVD to avoid having to go to class but a Pilates instructor can help correct your form and teach you the basic safety information. Once you know how the exercises is supposed to be done following along with the DVD will be much easier.
- As with any new exercise regime check with your health professional whether it is safe for you to do Pilates. Pilates is well known to be able to help with many postural problems and can in many cases even help with a bad back. If you have a back problem, are pregnant or have any pain please be sensible. Without a qualified instructor to guide you and to modify any exercises that are contraindicated you could be putting yourself at risk.

If I could pass on one piece of advice it would be to find a Pilates class in your area that you enjoy. Then go to that class at least once a week. I know finding an hour to go to class can be a challenge while you try to balance work, home, family and the hundreds of other things you need to get done in a day. Trust me any time you invest in yourself whilst doing Pilates will pay you back a hundred times over. You'll feel better, get stronger, become more flexible, protect yourself against poor posture (maybe even correct it if it's already bad) and feel more relaxed and in control of your life.
