The Italian Language

Italian is a Romance language spoken by about 63 million people, primarily in Italy and the southern part of Switzerland. In both of those countries, Italian is an official language (in Switzerland along with German, French and Romantsch).

Standard Italian was officially adopted by the state after the unification of Italy. It is based on Tuscan dialect and is somewhat intermediate between Italo-Dalmatian languages of Southern Italy and various Northern Italian dialects.

Murano Glass from Venice Italy - Vetro Murano

Murano has a reputation as a centre for glassmaking since about 1300. Venice, fearing the fires of the glass makers and the danger it represented to the mostly wood buildings, movee all foundries to Murano.

Murano's glassmakers were soon the island's most prominent citizens. By the 14th century, glassmakers were allowed to wear swords, enjoyed immunity from prosecution by the Venetian state. They are exceptional artists even today and their master pieces command very high prices, are unique and a joy to look at.
