Pimsleur Spanish Program Comparison

Ranked #2,912 in Education, #67,633 overall

Pimsleur Spanish Versus Platiquemos

There's no doubt that Pimsleur programs are among the best audio programs available for beginner's learning Spanish or for that matter any other language.

But what about the student that already has the basics down, completed the Pimsleur series, or needs a text and transcript to accompany their audio lessons? Also what about the course content, methodology and the price? Both courses are excellent and are increasingly well known. The key is to find out what method suits you the best.

In addition to our comparison, we have also provided a variety of additional recommended Spanish learning resources, videos, rss feeds, and more.

Pimsleur Versus Platiquemos

Pimsleur is audio focused. Pimsleur Spanish has 100 lessons currently available. While short booklets are included with each of the comprehensive courses, these reading booklets do not follow the transcripts.

In contrast, the Platiquemos course includes more than 50 hours of audio and more than 1500 pages of text Its is based on the original program produced by the Foreign Service Institute.

The text and audio, however are completely revised, edited, and updated. The FSI basis, however assures you that the inherent quality behind Platiquemos is unmatched.

The Platiquemos course includes basic sentences, drills, exercises, as well as conversation simulations and much more.

For example, Level I contains a song for each Unit representing various Spanish-speaking regions and musical styles, together with transcriptions, translations.

Notes about interesting linguistic and cultural time-lines from all Latin American countrieis from pre-Hispanic times to the present are included.

In addition, Platiquemos is a much more grammar focused course.

Vocabulary Builder for Spanish

Perfect for Children and Adults

Vocabulary Builder SpanishVocabulary Builder Spanish

IF your child's face lights up when they see a brightly colored picture, cuddly toy animal or a game, then this is for them. Vocabulary Builder Spanish is designed for kids who like to be entertained. It has lots of brightly colored pictures and fun games to get your child hooked on learning. Adults love this program too!

* Vocabulary Builder Spanish
* Three games to choose from - see if you can earn enough points for a certificate.
* Learn with sounds and amusing pictures that stick in your memory.
* Be quick! Listen to the words, then pick out the corresponding pictures before the time is up.
* It's over to you. Hear the pronunciation, then record your own voice and compare the two.
* Once you've recorded some words, you can string them together for interactive cinema!

Will it work for my child?

Vocabulary Builder Spanish is designed for children aged 4-12. It's a simple piece of educational software that they'll find easy to use. It's fun, engaging and encouraging - even for children who are easily distracted.

No reading required. Vocabulary Builder is all based on spoken language and pictures, so children don't have to be able to read in order to use it.
What will my child learn?

Vocabulary Builder covers some basic words and phrases. These have been chosen to be fun as well as useful. There are around 100 words in the program - just enough to get your child started without overloading them. The topics include colors, numbers, actions, professions and simple sentences with some prepositions.

How does it work?

There are three different sections:

1. Learn what the words mean with pictures accompanied by the spoken word.
2. Three exciting memory games that get progressively harder. It's this section where they really learn to recognise and remember words.
3. Record your own story. Browse through the pictures and record the words you want to appear. You can compare your recording with a native speaker if you want. You can also string your story together with any words you want to put in, then watch your story played back on cinema screen followed by a big round of applause. This really gets them talking in a foreign language and you'll be amazed how quickly they pick up the accent.

Notes for parents:

Biologically, the earlier a child is exposed to a second language the better - studies have proven that a young mind is more receptive than an older one. Learning Spanish will also improve your child's ability in other languages.

To speak and understand enough to "get by".

How does it work?

You can learn on the move. Carry on learning in the airport lounge or the ferry without a computer. Just print out the phrasebook sheets included in the program and take them with you, or upload the program's sound files onto an iPod.

IT'S easy to be fazed when you start a conversation in Spanish and the person you're talking to replies using lots of words that you haven't learned yet. World Talk prepares you for these real-life situations with addictive listening games. It will teach you to recognize key words in everyday situations and broaden your vocabulary.

* It's over to you. Record your part of the dialogue!

Will it work for me?

If your Spanish is good enough to follow basic conversations, but you still need to practice, World Talk is for you.

Everything you'll hear in the program is in Spanish, but you don't need to know every word before you start. Listen for key words that you already know, then pick up new words in the same way you would when talking to a native speaker.

What will I learn?

To keep on listening. When a word comes up that we don't recognise, we often stop listening because we're focusing on that one word and nothing else. This program lets you grasp the gist of what someone's saying without getting hung up on the words you don't understand.

You will develop your practical knowledge of Spanish. There are 10 different games covering numbers, conversations, descriptions, sentence building, directions and dictation practice. These activities cover a wide range of subjects and give you important practical skills that you can use immediately.

How does it work?

Play interactive language games and earn points for every game you play. High scorers can go on to win bronze, silver and gold awards, which you can print out as a record of achievement.

Speak and write in Spanish. Record yourself and compare your pronunciation with a native speaker, then test your written Spanish with four dictation exercises.

You'll start to think in Spanish! World Talk is an 'immersive' experience: in this program you will only hear Spanish. You'll learn to associate the language with memorable images - not just the equivalent words in your own language. This means you'll start thinking in Spanish, which will make you quicker at understanding and recalling words.

Four Ways To Learn Spanish

type=textFour Ways To Learn Spanish

Author: Shaun Kerrigan

There are four main ways to learn Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language and is one of the easier languages to learn and if you want to learn this lovely language these are the four main ways that you can do so.

Online Courses

One way that many people choose to learn Spanish is by taking online courses. This allows people to learn the language from the comfort of their own home and at times that they choose. The only problem is that you cannot always have your home computer and internet connection with you. Another drawback of learning online is that, many times, these online courses can be quite expensive as well, and many people do not want to spend so much money on online Spanish lessons. You also have to keep your eyes open to make sure you do not get caught up in fraud and give your payment information to someone who may misuse it.

Traditional Classes

Another way that many people learn to speak Spanish is by taking traditional classes at a local University or Community College. Many colleges offer Spanish classes so people can learn the language with ease. While learning in a college class may be a great way to learn the language, there are definite drawbacks to this method. Unfortunately, classes do not work around your busy schedule, but you have to work your schedule around the class times. For many people who have full time jobs, this can be quite difficult, and the cost is often preventive as well.

Books

There are many different books that are sold to help you learn to speak the Spanish language. Books can be a great way to learn the language since you can take them with you almost anywhere, but there are drawbacks to this method of learning as well. Unfortunately, the book does not offer pronunciations that you can hear and it is much harder to be motivated to learn a language when you are only able to read it and not hear it.

Audio Programs

One of the very best ways to learn Spanish is by using an audio program for your studies. Audio books and programs are so flexible to use and allow you to take them with you anywhere you go. All you need is your Walkman, portable CD player, or even your iPod and you have all that it takes to get started learning Spanish. Not only are audio programs flexible and easy to take anywhere, but they are also very cost effective as well. For $12- $25, you can have a great audio program that you can use over and over again and at any time you need to. These programs allow you to hear the words so you get the proper pronunciation in your head and also allow you to learn practical Spanish quickly.
