Be a Pin-Up Girl for Halowe'en!

Pin-up girls have been around since the 1890s, but they really hit their stride in WWII, when lonely GI's started putting photos of pin-up girls in their lockers. Whether they were wearing bathing suits or evening dresses, pin-up girls were the epitome of style and sexiness.

In the following article, you'll learn about the different types of pin-up looks, and how (and where) you can find what you need to make your costume perfect. Getting your look right will require careful attention to hair, make-up, clothing, shoes, and accessories. Fortunately, with so many current styles trending toward retro, and the rockabilly look as popular as it is, it's easy to find what you need to complete your pin-up look.

Pin-up girls were models and actresses whose images were taken from magazines, calendars, or posters. To the soldiers of WWII, the pin-up girl represented beauty and a little bit of sexiness -- but most importantly, she represented home. Her beauty was classic, and it still holds up 60 years later.

If you're looking for a sexy Haloween costume, why not dress as a 1940s pin-up girl?

The Pin-Up Girl Look

You've got room to play!

Yank Magazine Pin-Up Girls WWII

During WWII, American soldiers and GI's hung pictures inside their lockers. The pictures served as a remedy for homesickness, and included pictures of family, friends, and the the girl he left behind. They also served as a way to assert individuality and private space in an environment that was heavily regimented. Soldiers had to dress a certain way, and act a certain way, and do whatever the brass told them to do, but the inside of their lockers was their own space.

The average GI in World War II was a young man, possibly still in his teens. Given this fact, it's hardly surprising that one of the most popular pictures to hang in a soldier's locker was a picture of a pin-up girl.

But there was a wide range of styles for the pin-up girl, as is shown by the collection of images above. She could be natural and athletic, sexy and seductive, swank and glamorous, or she could be the girl next door. That gives you a lot of options when putting together your pin-up girl costume.

Roackabilly Dresses on eBay

For the sexy, seductive pin-up girl

If you want to go the glamorous and sexy route for your pin-up look, there are plenty of rockabilly dresses to choose from on eBay. Rockabilly was an early type of rock and roll music from the 1950s, but it has its roots in Western swing music of the 30s and 40s.

Rockabilly styles tend to emphasize the female form. They can be form-fitting wiggle dresses or feature full skirts and crinolines. They tend to have low necklines to show off decollete. A rockabilly dress is an easy-to-find option for your pin-up girl costume.

Pin-Up Girl Gloves

to complete your 1940s evening look!

In the 1940's, a lady never was never seen without a pair of gloves. The color was usually white, ivory, or black. The length varied to compliment the sleeve length of her gown. A strapless or sleeveless gown called for long, "opera length" gloves that came up above her elbow. A gown with short sleeves called for gloves that came up above her forearm. If her gown had long sleeves, she would wear wrist-length gloves. The right pair of gloves will perfect your 1940s pin-up girl look!

In the 1940s, the natural, athletic look was considered to be just as sexy as any other. This is one of the easiest vintage looks to achieve with modern fashion.

Simply find a pair of wide leg, "trouser" style pants. High waisted is best. Then find a short sleeve sweater or blouse, and tuck it into your trousers. Add a belt. Finish off the look with sandals and a nautical style hat.

Whether she was dressed up for an evening on the town, or heading out to the beach, a woman of the 1940s always attended to her coiffure. Hair could be worn in short, medium, or long styles, and was usually curled or waved. This helped add volume to the many updo styles that were popular at this time period.

Pin-Up Girl Make-Up

It's all about the lips and lashes.

Gene Tierney

This picture of pin-up girl and actress Gene Tierney is an excellent example of 1940s make-up.

In the 1940s, emphasis was placed on the lips and eyelashes. Lipstick was worn in various shades of red, and lip liner was used to soften the cupids bow and make the lips appear fuller. Eyeliner and mascara were always worn in black or black-brown. Eyeshadow was in neutral colors, and rouge was used to give a healthy glow to the cheeks. Brows could be of any thickness, as long as the arch was emphasized. Foundation powder was applied to give an overall matte look to the face.

1940's Eye Make-Up

It's all about the lips and lashes.

To get your look right, you'll want to buy a black liquid eyeliner and either black or black-brown mascara. The mascara is applied on both your top and bottom lashes, and the eyeliner just to your top lid. If you want to go all out, you can curl your lashes before applying mascara, and then apply false eyelashes. Then, apply the eyeliner where the false lashes meets your lash line.

Bright Red Lipstick

You can't complete your 1940s or pin-up girl look without red lipstick. And in the 1940s, red lipstick was red. Choose a matte shade for the most authentic look.

1940s Make-Up Tutorials

Watch how it's done!

Here are some of Jessica Harlow's youtube make-up tutorials. I like her videos because they seem clear and easy to follow, even if you're someone - like me - who doesn't wear a lot of make up.

The first one is inspired by Dita von Teese. Harlow keeps her eyeshadow in neutral colors, and uses black liner and mascara. The lips are red red red!

The second one is an extreme/pin-up version of a Wizard of Oz look.

The third one explains how to apply false lashes.

The fourth will teach you everything you need to know about shaping your brows.

1940s and Pin-Up Girl Shoes

from Zappos

If your feet are much bigger than a size 8, you'll have a hard time finding a pair of vintage shoes to fit you. I know this. I am a size ten, and let me tell you, there simply are not vintage shoes on the internet in my size.

Fortunately, there are modern styles that will work perfectly with your retro costume. Shoes in the 1940s could come in some pretty wild colors, with scalloped edges, and decorative bows, flowers, or rhinestones at the toe. Go with a peep toe pump for a glamorous pin-up girl look, or a clog, wedge, or espardrille for a more athletic look.

Zappos has an increible number of these styles -- more than I have room to show here. Better yet, they offer free shipping and free returns, so you can buy with confidence!
