The Pinata dates back before the time of Marco Polo who discovered the Pinata in China. It was used to celebrate the coming of Spring. The Pinata was then introduced to the Spanish as well as the French and Italian. When the Spanish conquered Mexico the Pinata custom was brought with it.
The original Spanish Pinata was a 7-point star colored in bright colors of red, green and white, the colors of the Mexican flag. Other colors like pink and blue were also used for unusual and different ethnicity. Each point of the star represented the 7 deadly sins: sloth, gluttony, envy, greed, lust, anger and pride. The stick, which is used to break the pinata, represents love.
By hitting the deadly sins with the stick of love, the sins are destroyed and the candy you are rewarded is a symbol of forgiveness for your sins and a new beginning. The eyes are covered to shield you from the sins and after hitting the Pinata, a resolution is made such as being nicer, getting along better with others and so on.
Traditions have changed over the years and the Pinata has become a hit at children's parties with children trying to break the Pinata or pulling a string and candy and toys flowing all over the ground for children to gather and keep.

History of Pinatas
Pinatas have been used all around the world for hundreds of years to celebrate special occasions, mainly kid birthday parties. Although breaking a pinata at children's birthdays is very much a tradition among Hispanics, this fun kid party game has spread throughout the entire United States.
The tradition of breaking a pinata originated in Europe in ancient times. It was a simple painted clay pot decorated with colorful paper and filled with candy and coins. Today pinatas are made of paper Mache.
The traditional Mexican star-shaped pinata was part of early Christmas Mexican celebrations representing the Star of Bethlehem that guided worshippers to baby Jesus.
Today the pinata has come to replace the game of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" as kids favorite party game. Nowadays it is even used as a party decoration: it makes a great centerpiece! Pull string pinatas, a gentler version of this popular party activity, have been invented to allow toddlers enjoy the game as much as older kids do.

Hey I LOVE all the pinatas -- our little "almost 3 year old" quadruplet grandbabies are having a birthday next month - think I'll try one of these for them. Thanks a bunch for the information. 5***** Posted September 19, 2008 |
