So what is pinging?
Most bloggers are already familiar with pinging. For those who are not it is simply when you notify a blog search engine such as technorati that your blog has been updated. The blog search engines that you ping then crawl your blog. Any tags that you use for your posts will show up as links back to your blog from the search engines that you ping.
How frequently should you ping your blog?
The answer to that question is every time you publish a new post. I don't recommend pinging without making a new post otherwise the search engines might stop crawling your blog.

Tips for getting the most out of pinging
First of all you need to claim your blog with technorati. That is the only way they will crawl and index your blog when you ping them. Secondly you should tag your posts with as many relevant keywords as possible. The reason for that is since each tag will provide another link on each search engine you get more links and direct traffic. Finally instead of pinging the search engines manually you should use a service like king ping or pingoat that I already talked about.
