Ping Pong T-shirts and Gifts

If you're passionate for Ping Pong, you're in good company. Upper class Victorians in the 1880's were the first to play Ping Pong, though their version was vastly different from what we play today. For a net, they used a row of books. Their ball was either the rounded top of a champagne cork, or a large knot of string. Cigar box lids were the paddles. The goal was to play an indoor version of tennis.

This strange version of tennis was so wildly popular that proper equipment started to appear. Parchment paddles were the next incarnation, a step up from cigar box lids, and the game was known as Whiff-Whaff or Ping-Pong.. Proper balls made of celluloid were the next improvement, followed by a sturdier paddle similar to those used today.

By the turn of the century, Parker Brothers was making an indoor tennis kit which included a portable net, a ball and paddles. Ping Pong was known by many names, including Gossima, Table Tennis, Whiff Whaff, Parlour Tennis, Indoor Tennis, Pom-Pom, Pim-Pam, Netto, Royal Game and Tennis de Salon.
