Pretty Pink Camellia

My Camellia Shrub is Pretty and Pretty Dark Pink!
My Pretty Pink Camellia shrub has dark green foliage year-round and it's so darn pretty when it blooms. The flowers are quite dark pink and almost have a rose like appearance. There are numerous petals on one flower and many flowers grow along one branch.
This species of Camellia is called a Japanese Camellia; an ornamental flowering evergreen shrub. The term "evergreen" means the camellia shrub keeps its leaves year-round although it does occasionally shed leaves. The leaves are shiny and dark green and grow in an alternate pattern. The branches are woody and stocky but are easy to prune. I prune my camellia shrub after the flowers have withered and the shrub is no longer blooming or has buds.
Camellia shrubs have a short flowering season but the pretty green foliage shines year-round. This hardy shrub is perfect for milder climates. I love photographing flowers and I've found a few of my favorites of this Pretty Pink Camellia.

My Pretty Pink Camellia
I planted my camellia shrub in our backyard against the house to add some privacy to the back patio.
The wooden gabezo surrounding the patio had blown down and I wanted a pretty shrub to block the open back patio.
I was looking for a white camellia that reminded me of my wedding flowers but I couldn't resist this camellia shrub with the pretty pink flowers.

Camellia Shrub in Full Bloom - Summer 2010
We had a very wet spring and rainy June in 2010, but my pink camellia shrub still bloomed. The flowers are smaller but pretty against the green foliage. This camellia really is a hardy shrub.

Camellia Art Posters by Zazzle Artists
Camellias are a favorite flower to paint by many artists. These flowers are often seen in many botanical illustrations. I love how these artists have interpreted the camellia flower on canvas.
The Camellia flower grows as a single, semi-double, or double flower. It is usually painted as a single flower. The colors range from white to pink and red and sometimes yellow.
Helpful Links on Camellia Shrubs
Camellia Shrubs will grow in Zones 3 and 4 although many hybrids have been developed for growing in colder climates for Zones 5 and 6. Camellia's prefer acidic soil and will not grow in chalky or calcium-rich soil. The soil should be well-drained and kept moist to prevent root rot. The Japanese Camellia will grow quite rapidly and reach an amazing 20-30 feet tall. More information is available at the following websites:

I was taking a drive through an older neighborhood when I spotted this huge flowering shrub from a distance. I returned later with my camera and captured some photos of this huge dark pink camellia shrub in full bloom. It's amazing!

Pretty View Along the Fence

This is my favorite photo of this huge pink camellia shrub. The sun is starting to set and there is a soft shadow cast against the fence. The colors of the flowers and leaves are softer as the shrub begins to shed its dry flowers and yellow leaves.
