Why Pink Hair Pops

Pink hair pops. That's a fact. (Exhibit A- the photo of Audrey Kitching to the left.) Pink is a funky, edgy, big, bold, bright, hot color that is hard to ignore. Brunettes, blondes and-- dare I say it-- even redheads can't easily compete with pink-haired people. And while it is not so common in the everyday world, it is in the fashion & entertainment cultures, as this lens will detail. If you are looking for something specific and don't want to scroll through the whole page, simply see the table of contents below and click on what you want. Enjoy!

Pink Hair Wigs

Pink Hair WigIf you're unsure about dying your hair pink (or dying your hair period), pink hair wigs are a great way to help you decide what hairstyle, hair length and/or shade of pink will look best on you. You can borrow or buy a wig to wear for awhile and see if you tire of it quickly or embrace your new pink hair. It might also help you see how others will perceive you with pink hair, and whether or not you'll be comfortable with such a bold hair color. Check out the wigs in the following Amazon wig modules for a few examples & ideas.

Pink Hair Extensions

Pink Hair ExtensionsIf you're simply trying to achieve a streaked look abd don't want a full head of pink hair, you can use extensions. Or, if you're ready to dye your hair pink but have short or thin hair, and you want long, voluminous pink hair, hair extensions can help with this too because you won't have to wait to grow your hair out. If you have your hair dyed professionally, you can bring a package of hair extensions with you to show the hairstylist exactly what color to dye your hair. They can put the extensions in some time after that (probably not the same day, since your dyed hair and scalp might need a break before putting the hair extensions in).

Just as I mentioned on my Red Hair & Redheads lens (and I'll be restating this verbatim [exactly the same]), extensions can be done several different ways. Here are a few of them:

  • Clip-on hair extensions can be clipped and pinned in with your hair, and then brushed or combed to blend in with your own hair. This is probably the easiest way to get extensions done.

  • Weaving/Sewn-in hair extensions, where your hair is braided a certain way, and then the hair extensions are sewn in along the braids.

  • Braided-in hair extensions, where the extensions are just braided in with your own hair. This is usually only done when you're going to have all your hair braided up or have dreadlocks.

  • Bonding/Glued-in extensions. To my knowledge, there are different types of glues that can be used. But the best kind of glue to use for this process is protein glue. I had extensions done this past summer with protein glue, which my hairdresser told me is best for the hair since hair is made up of protein as well, which makes the glue more gentle on your hair than other glues.

Here is a very good link/website with more information about hair extensions:

  • HairResources.net (first of 6 steps/pages on the research and process to be aware of when getting hair extensions; also describes 7 ways to get hair extensions done [which include the four ways I described above])

Pink Hair Dye / Color / Colour

Pink Hair DyeIf you're ready to dye your hair pink, you need to go about it the right way. It's best if you can get your hair dyed by a professional hairstylist, but you can also do it yourself. While you can just add pink dye to your hair, the actual pink your hair ends up depends on how dark or light your hair already is. Dark hair will likely just end up with a pink tint to it, while light hair will turn out bright pink. If you want your hair to be a deep, vibrant, striking pink, you'll need to bleach it. The lens below has great tips and a list of steps on how to bleach your hair properly before dying it pink.

Punk / Scene Pink Hair

Punk culture is likely where pink hair originated, as punk culture is all about going against the norm. But as unusual as pink hair is for most of society, it's pretty prominent in scene culture. Most likely, some of you just read that sentence (as well as the title of this module) and said, "I know what punk style is, but what is scene style?" Well, this is the best way I know how to describe it. If you're familiar with "emo", you know that their style is related to punk. So the hairstyles are similar, but they tend to wear a lot of black. Well, scene is related to punk as well. But scene style involves a lot of color- hence, pink hair! Below is a collage of several pictures of pink scene hair.

Celebs Who Have or Have Had Pink Hair

Whether or not you realized it (before seeing this module), there have been plenty of celebrities who have had pink hair or still have it. Some looks great with it, while others not so much. I'm highlighting the best looking pink-haired styles & colors on celebs here.

Gwen Stefani with Candy Pink HairWhile likely not the first celeb to have pink hair, Gwen Stefani is the first celeb that I remember seeing with pink hair. She rocked the look during the promotion of No Doubt's album Return to Saturn, wearing varying shades of pink. In this picture, she has light pink hair with a tint of blonde.

Pink / P!nk with Hot Pink Hair stripeIt would be odd to talk about pink hair without mentioning the singer Pink, who has dyed her hair a variety of colors, pink included. Here, she has her blonde hair pinned up, with dark pink on the nape of her neck and a tinted pink blonde bun.

Lily Allen with Candy Pink HairBritish pop singer Lily Allen dyed her hair pink a few years ago before returning to her usual dark brunette color. In my opinion, most of the photos I saw of her with pink hair-- I just didn't think it looked good. She was usually barefaced, no makeup, and so I thought she looked a bit washed out. (Google "Lily Allen Pink Hair" and you will see what I mean). But here, she's wearing makeup, and her pink hair is lighter than it initially was, but matches her light skin color. So in my opinion, she looks pretty good here. Though, I actually still prefer her with dark hair. But it's just hair.

Lady Gaga Pink HairLady Gaga seems to change her hair every month, always doing something new and unusual, or old and iconic (like when she mimics Madonna). I don't even remember when she had this pink hair, and I can't tell if it's a wig or not. Nonetheless, it's attention-getting. And no one would expect anything less of Gaga, right?

Last but not least is a photo of British Pop-Soul singer Joss Stone with dark hair, tinted pink. This is a great example of how you can have a somewhat understated pink dye job, but still have it pop.Joss Stone Pink Hair
