What does Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye look like and is it contagious?

Conjunctivitis, also known as Pink Eye, is a very contagious condition if it is caused by a bacterial infection and is passed from one to another by contact. For example, your child is at school with a classmate with pink eye. The classmate rubs his eyes, holds hands or plays with toys your child is also playing with and handling, and then your child rubs his or her eyes. This and similar scenarios is the way bacteria is passed from one to another.

The eye can also appear pink if it is reacting to an allergen. Whatever the cause, as you can see, it doesn't make a very "pretty picture". The picture is a more extreme case than we have encountered in our home and should be looked at by a doctor.

I'll be sharing the natural home remedy I used for my children as they were growing up, and it worked 100% of the time. As a matter of fact, I have even used this remedy on our Yorkshire Terrier...yes, dogs get pink eye, too, and sometimes the home remedy for pink eye I prepared worked depending upon the cause.

Treating Pink Eye or Conjuntivitis at Home

A home remedy

When my children had pink eye, I would try the following for a couple of days...if there was no improvement, it was off to the doctor. By way of disclaimer, I am not a doctor, and you are responsible for the outcome if you try this, but many agree that it is very safe:

1) Heat about a cup of water just to boiling, then would turn off the heat, and when boiling stopped, would add the contents of 1-2 capsules of an herbal combination called EW, which as the code letter indicate, makes a great eye wash. I have also used Golden Seal alone for this.

2) Swish the pot a bit to stir in the herbs, then let it sit still for about 5-10 minutes. The herb powder will have settled on the bottom.

3) CAREFULLY pour the liquid into a sterile dropper bottle, or storage bottle of some kind if you plan to use this as an eye was with an eye was cup...do this carefully enough not to pour any of the herbal powder into the container or bottle.

4) Solution should be at room temperature before using.

5) Clean the outside of the eye, closed, with some of this solution on a cotton ball, never returning the used item to the solution to keep it sterile.

6) Use a dropper and drop a couple drops into the eye, or have them rinse using an eye cup. For a very short time there may be a little stinging, but it doesn't last long.

This would be done a few times a day, the MOST IMPORTANT time being bedtime, when the eyes will be closed all night, which allows the bacteria to grow in the eyes at a greater rate.

This worked every time. If there was no improvement within 2 days, I would have taken them to the doctor, but in the case of my two children, now in their 20's, this was never necessary.

Tip: You can also make your own tea bag of sorts by putting the herb powder into a coffee filter and tying closed tightly with thread or string, then immersing in your hot water.

Home remedy for Pink Eye caused by Allergies

You can buy this instead of the little bottles of saline solution

When our dog had eye problems, our vet thought it was allergies, and suggested that we purchase the saline solution for sensitive eyes used to clean contact lenses. We did what he suggested, and we have been using this to soothe our own eyes during allergy season when the pollen is thick or our eyes are feeling dry and irritated.

This solution also soothes the eyes in a dry climate or when the house is dry due to heating in the winter.

You can get this in a LARGE quantity for as much or less than you pay for those little bottles of eye drops. It's a wonderful economic solution to irritated red eyes caused by allergies.

Is it better to treat your child's or your own eye infections yourself or seek a doctor? Both alternatives are discussed here.
