The secret to picking out your dream pink dog bed

Down the pink aisle ...

If the generation gap were a color, it would be pink

Go down your local/virtual pet store and ask for a pink dog bed. The person there will probably take you to the entire aisle dedicated to pink dog accessories where you will find loads of pink dog collars, pink dog leashes and other toys. No doubt you will find there several pink dog bed models as well, ranging from the basic crate pad to the more sophisticated dog sofa couch.

As common as this might look now, this does not used to be the case ... at all. Dog beds themselves, as we know them today are a rather new invention. Ask your parents or grandparents. They will probably tell you that their dog used to sleep on what is closer to an old blanket thrown on the ground than a regular (dog) bed.

Did dogs' bedding requirements change that much in a couple of decades? I don't think so. What's really changed is how we perceive them. No doubt heavy marketing has a lot to do with this but the end result is part of our society now. Dogs have been humanized up to a point where we grant them for having feelings and emotions. We also transfered our needs onto them. Hence the creation of dog beds.

If you are still with me here, then you might be wondering: "Aren't you going a bit too deep for what started as a lighthearted chat on picking out a pink dog bed?" Well, maybe. But the truth is, if you understand this, then you will be in a much better position to buy the perfect pink dog bed.

Back to the basics

Stuff you must not neglect when picking out a dog bed

Here is the thing: when you buy a small dog bed, what you should be considering primarily is your dog comfort and well-being. After all, she will be the one sleeping on it! So you should be checking things like:

  1. Size: will your dog fit in it, in any position she might adopt when sleeping (curled up, on her side, flat on her belly, etc.)?

  2. Padding: you want to check the type of padding (some have flea repellant properties like cedar fillings) and how thick it is. This will determine for a great part how comfortable the dog bed is going to be. Extra thick and memory foam beds exist for older dogs, with joint problems.

  3. Temperature: the bed's ability to keep your little dog warm or cool, whether you live in a cold or hot region.

Basic stuff, which happens to be the more critical factors if you want your dog to sleep in it (as opposed to having her coming back to your own bed in the middle of the night!).

Next, you should consider how convenient for you this new dog bed is going to be. And that's when you start taking a closer look at its durability, the resistance to constant chewing (so that you don't end up picking up bits of the bed in your whole house) and the ease of washing.

And it's only when those two sets of criteria are met that you should start thinking about the fun stuff: colors, uniqueness, those cute little pink ribbons that make all the difference, etc. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not saying that this is the least important criteria (otherwise I wouldn't be writing on pink dog beds, would I?), but it is the order you should follow for your next small dog bed if you don't want to be disappointed a couple of weeks down your purchase.

Just imagine you bought your dream dog bed, only to realize that the cover cannot be removed, making it a real pain to wash. That surely takes a lot of the fun away ...

The pink dog bed epiphany

The road to enlightenment

Well ... in theory. There can be times when you don't mind trading off convenience for elegance, pride and excitement. That is exactly what happens with a pink dog bed. Remember what I said earlier about dogs being humanized, dogs having emotions and feelings? Here is the news: there is a great chance that your dog won't even see that pink you find so lovely (dogs have a different color vision than humans). Let alone appreciate it as much as you do.

So the important thing to realize here is that you are buying that pink dog bed for yourself. The "pink" side of it at least. Nothing wrong with that at all, as long as you keep your dog's comfort and well-being as the most important criteria. Everything else is up to you ... and that's where all the fun starts!

A two step process to pick out your dream pink dog bed - First, browse ...

Your emotions are in charge

First off, let go of all the logical and rational thinking that might be happening in your head. You are picking out a pink dog bed, not an investment portfolio! Your emotions and feelings should be the primary indicators. Browse through online and offline offers while keeping an eye on your emotional response.

Hint: Amazon and eBay are good places to consider for your research as they provide a wide range of products, which highly increases the odds of finding "the one".

... then place it in the desired context

Your own virtual reality

If you find one that really moves you, then picture it in the room where you want it to be by using your imagination. Better yet, have a photo of that spot with you and place it alongside the bed (which could be on your screen if you do this online). The reason behind this is to check that the shade of pink that you chose for your pink dog bed goes well with your interior's colors.

Some colors are known to look good with pink:

  • Chocolate brown (my all times favorite)

  • Medium to darker shades of blue

  • Medium to darker shades of green

  • White

  • Various shades of grey

  • ... and any other color you might like. Remember that you should be the one enjoying it so do not pay to much attention to the stats!

At that stage, you should also be checking that the pink dog bed style matches your interior.

Conclusion

To wrap things up ...

That's really all there is to it! Once you find a pink dog bed that combines the required level of comfort for your dog and your stylistic considerations (trust your gut feelings), then you found it!
