Syd Barrett
Syd Barrett Biography - Part I
A Short Version Lifestory
When Bob Close left the band, Syd renamed the group The Pink Floyd Sound, named after the cover of an album of two american bluesmen, Pink Anderson, and Floyd Council. Syd wrote almost everything for The Pink Floyd Sound, then The Pink Floyd finally renamed just Pink Floyd), he played guitar, sung, and wrote the music and the lyrics as well. The other Cambridge native forming The Pink Floyd were Roger Waters (bass), Rick Wright (keyboards), and Nick Mason (drums).Within weeks the new line-up had rehearsed at the Thompson Private Record Company, a tiny studio sited in the basement of a house in Hemel, Hampstead. Here they recorded two songs; an original hinged to the Gloria riff entitled Lucy Leave and a version of Slim Harpo's I'm a King Bee already made famous by the Rolling Stones. At first, The Pink Floyd were a much more conventional act that the act into which they would evolve, concentrating on the rock and R&B material that were so common to the repertoires of mid-'60s British bands.
Syd's influences were the Stones, Beatles, Byrds and Love," the group's first manager, Pete Jenner, told Nick Kent, adding at Barrett wore out his copy of the last-named group's debut album. "I was trying to tell him about this Arthur Lee song I couldn't remember the title of, so I just hummed the main riff. Syd picked up his guitar, followed what I was humming, and went on to use the chord pattern he worked out for 'Interstellar Overdrive'.
Pink Floyd then began to experiment, however, stretching out songs with wild instrumental freak-out passages incorporating feedback, electronic screeches, and unusual, eerie sounds created by loud amplification, reverb, and such tricks as sliding ball bearings up and down guitar strings. In 1966, they began to pick up a following in the London underground; onstage, they began to incorporate light shows to add to the psychedelic effect. Most importantly, Syd Barrett began to compose pop-psychedelic gems that combined unusual psychedelic arrangements (particularly in the haunting guitar and celestial organ licks) with catchy melodies and incisive lyrics that viewed the world with a sense of poetic, child-like wonder, pushung the pop format to its outer limits.
Syd Barrett Biography - Part II
A Short Version Lifestory
When Pink Floyd released two sets of singles, Arnold Layne, Candy and a Currant Bun and See Emily Play, The ScareCrow, Syd got heavily into drugs, under the pressure of his fame. Arnold Layne was meanwhile coupled to another original from the first Sound Techniques' visit, Let's Roll Another One, later given the less contentious title Candy and a Currant Bun. The pairing formed the Pink Floyd's debut the following March and the resultant top 30 hit confirmed the group as a national attractionAfter the success of the singles, Syd wrote most of Pipers at the Gates of Dawn, released in 1967, which can be considered as the greatest British psychedelic album other than Sgt. Pepper's. Dominated almost wholly by Barrett's songs, the album was a charming funhouse of driving, mysterious rockers (Lucifer Sam), odd character sketches (The Gnome), childhood flashbacks (Bike, Matilda Mother), and freakier pieces with lengthy instrumental passages (Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive, Pow R Toc H) that mapped out their fascination with space travel. The record was not only like no other at the time; it was like no other that Pink Floyd would make, colored as it was by a vision that was far more humorous, pop-friendly, and light-hearted than those of their subsequent epics.
Interstellar Overdrive, with it's extended free-form passage, was the piece which established Pink Floyd's experimental reputation and it was one of the tracks the group attempted during their first recording session at Chelsea's Sound Technique.
Around mid-1967, the prodigy began showing increasingly alarming signs of mental instability. Syd would go catatonic onstage, playing music that had little to do with the material, or not playing at all. An American tour had to be cut short when he was barely able to function at all, let alone play the pop star game. Dependent upon Barrett for most of their vision and material, the rest of the group were nevertheless finding him impossible to work with, live or in the studio. One night, on the way to a performance, the other members decided not to pick up Barrett becauseof his heavy drug addiction and unpredictability. To cover for Barrettwas his old friend David Gilmour, who was also from Cambridge and whith whom Syd toured as a folk singer on the french côte d'azur in his 16.
Syd Barrett Biography - Part III
A Short Version Lifestory
Syd had only three tracks on the Saucerful of Secrets, the second album.and the rest were Waters tracks. Barrett agreed to the permanantsplit of him and the group. After he left Pink Floyd, he recorded separatesolo albums, there was Barrett, The Madcap Lauphs, The Peel Session acoustic live album with David Gilmour, and Opel and various other compilation and collection of rare material. Syd only attenpted once to play with a new band, Star. After Pink Floyd's great success with Dark Side of the Moon, Syd went to check up on his friends in the group Pink Floyd. He showed up at a Recording session of Wish You Were Here.At first nobody recognized Syd, but after a while they realized who it was and they welcomed him. Although Syd didn't play at the session, the album was about him, a thank you recording for his help in there early career.
Syd is now a schizophrenic, and resides sometimes with his aunt in Cambridge, sometimes in his London flat. He now carries a low profile live on, and is rarelyseen. The money he made during the early Floyd days was enough to support his low key life.
Despite their astral image, Pink Floyd was brought down to earth in the 1980s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and, ultimately, ownership of the band's very name.
Since that time, they've been little more than a dinosaur act, capable of filling stadiums and topping the charts, but offering little more than a spectacular recreation of their most successful formulas. Their latter-day staleness cannot disguise the fact that, for the first decade or so of their existence, they were one of the most innovative groups around, in concert and (especially) in the studio.
It was reported in 1996 that Syd was lying ill in a Cambridge hospital, unable or unwilling to regulate his diabetic condition.
The diabetes killed Syd Barrett, 60 years old, in his mothers house in Cambridge July 9. 2006

Wassup Dave?
Give me the mystfied Pink Floyd style back!
Lately, the former Pink Floyd guitarist and singer, David Gilmour has released an new album. While promoting the album, he had come up with some strange revelations.First, he complained that musicians, like himself, got far too much paid campared to doctors or teachers. Ok David, what about some free concerts? That could be a good start. Remember; you are among the pioneers!
Secondly, he pronounced that The Rolling Stones were too old to tour!
What is that all about? Last time Gillmour went on a big tour, he was 60 years old.
I liked the quiet and mystified PF style!

Pink Floyd guitarist blocking reunion
Article from therockradio.com
Pink Floyd guitarist blocking reunionIf you want to blame someone for keeping a Pink Floyd reunion from happening, Nick Mason says David Gilmour is the guilty party. According to the fan-run Pink Floyd website brain-damage.co.uk, the drummer said the positions are now reversed and "David is as Roger (Waters) was, 20 years before," meaning Gilmour won't have anything to do with Waters. To be fair, the drummer also pointed out that Gilmour is still working to promote his On An Island record.
After last summer's reunion at the Live 8 show in London, which was the first time the members of Pink Floyd had all played together since 1981, Waters and Mason said they'd like to do more, even if it was just for causes like Live 8. But Gilmour quickly shot down the idea, and he reportedly declined an offer for a US tour that was said to be worth $200 million.
Waters and Mason will perform the 1973 Floyd album The Dark Side If The Moon on July 14th at the Magna-Cours racetrack in Nevers, France, to celebrate 100 years of Grand Prix motor racing. They've invited keyboardist Richard Wright along, and while Mason said last week that Wright had accepted the offer, that hasn't been confirmed. Wright toured this year in Gilmour's band.

Pink Floyd Album Notches Up More Chart History
Written by Stereoboard.com
Saturday, 06 May 2006Pink Floyd album 'Dark Side of the Moon' has notched up another enormous feat, by becoming the first album to spend a total of 1500 weeks on the American Billboard charts.
The classic album, which was recorded at Abbey Road studios in 1972, was released the following year and spent a consecutive 736 weeks in the Top 200.
The album finally dropped out of the charts in 1988, but has since gone on to spend a further 759 weeks on the charts.
It is believed that the album has sold in excess of 40 million copies worldwide.
Roger Waters though always felt he had something special on his hands when the album was created way back 33 years ago.
Mr Waters tells Billboard.com, "When the record was finished, I took a reel-to-reel copy home with me, and I remember playing it for my wife and her bursting into tears when it was finished. "I thought, 'This has obviously struck a chord.' I was kinda pleased by that. I thought to myself, 'Wow, this is a pretty complete piece of work,' and I had every confidence that people would respond to it."

David Gilmour - Biography - Part I
A version short lifestory
David Gilmour is one of the World's most popular guitarists. As part of Pink Floyd and as a solo artist, he is easily recognisable by his soaring Fender tone and beautifully crafted guitar solos. Gilmour has a vast collection of Strats and Teles, including a 1954 Strat (The first year of production) with the serial number '001.' (Although it is not the first production model.)David Gilmour was born in Cambridge on 6th March 1946. As a child, David grew up listening to the likes of Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets and Jailhouse Rock. During his time as a student at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, the young Gilmour first met future Pink Floyd founder, Syd Barrett. The pair became good friends and spent their lunchtimes in the college's art department playing Beatles and Stones riffs.
Between '63 and '66, Gilmour played in a number of bands and had a variety of odd jobs including a fashion model and a van driver. In 1967, he was invited by Syd Barrett to the Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea, London to see Pink Floyd record their second single, See Emily Play.
During this time, Syd Barrett's mental health began to deteriorate due to excess drug experimentation. After Pink Floyd's first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Gilmour was approached by Floyd drummer, Nick Mason to replace Barrett. Hence, the second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets, featured both Gilmour and Barrett. (Although they never recorded their parts together)
The next Floyd album was the adventurous Ummagumma, which featured Gilmour's first attempt at lyric writing and some beautiful guitar work, including his song, The Narrow Way (Parts 1-3)
This was followed by a fertile period that saw the band experiment and Gilmour's stature grow as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. During this period, Floyd recorded the soundtrack, More (1970) the very psychedelic Atom Heart Mother and Meddle, (1971) as well as compilation album, Relics (1971) and Obscured By Clouds. (1972)
David Gilmour - Biography - Part II
A short version lifestory
The next album, Wish You Were Here (1975) contained one of Gilmour's finest works, Shine On You Crazy Diamond. This was written for his old college friend and band founder, Syd Barrett, who, ironically, turned up at Abbey Road studios in London as it was being recorded. Gilmour has never seen him since. In 1977, the band recorded Animals, which the critics greeted with a mixed reception and featured some excellent guitar work from Gilmour.
In 1978, he released his first solo album, David Gilmour, and worked as a producer on Kate Bush's landmark album, The Kick Inside.
The hugely successful album The Wall followed in 1979. During this time, tensions within Pink Floyd were becoming unbearable and after the album was released, keyboard player Rick Wright left the group, leaving Gilmour and Roger Waters to fight it out.
The following year saw the release of Gilmour's second solo album, About Face, accompanied by a world tour from March to July of 1984 and an appearance with Bryan Ferry at Live Aid in July 1985.
Gilmour finally won the right to use the Pink Floyd name after Roger Waters had left the band. This led to their first album as a trio, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. (1987) The newly invigorated Pink Floyd toured the world thereafter and released a live album and video, The Delicate Sound Of Thunder (1989) to massive worldwide acclaim.
Following a long spell, the band released their next studio album, The Division Bell (1994) followed by a live album, Pulse. (1995)
Gilmour did a small acoustic tour in 2001, which was released as a DVD/VHS in October 2002.

Roger Waters Biography - Part I
A short version lifestory
Roger Waters was a primary creative force in Pink Floyd from 1965 to 1983. He first met Syd Barrett, who would become the band's lead singer and guitarist, during his school days when both attended a Saturday art class. He moved to London to study architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic and thereformed a band with drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Rick Wright;
he played bass and sang. Barrett joined them, forming Pink Floyd.
Though Barrett was the band's main songwriter at first, Waters wrote or co-wrote three songs
on the first LP, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (U.S. release: September 1967),
including the sole composition "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk." By the time of the group's second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (July 1968), Barrett had been replaced by David Gilmour
and Waters had begun to take a more prominent role, contributing three songs and one co-composition to the LP. He also wrote or co-wrote all but one of the tunes for the band's soundtrack to the film More (July 1969) while his first solo work came on Ummagumma (November 1969), a two-LP set that consisted of one disc of live material and a second disc on which each band member contributed his own tracks.
As of Atom Heart Mother (October 1970), Pink Floyd began to work up its material as a group,
though Waters still contributed the sole composition "If." Working with Ron Geesin,
he wrote the soundtrack for The Body (December 1970),
his first work outside Pink Floyd. He also wrote or co-wrote eight of the ten selections
on Obscured by Clouds (June 1972), Pink Floyd's soundtrack for the film The Valley.
Pink Floyd's recordings were moderately successful through 1972.
But The Dark Side of the Moon (March 1973), for which Waters wrote all the lyrics
and some of the music, was a commercial breakthrough that became one of the most
successful albums in rock history. (He was the sole author of the album's Top Ten hit "Money.")
Roger Waters Biography - Part II
A short version lifestory
He took an increasingly dominant role in the writing of subsequent Pink Floyd albums, writing all the lyrics and collaborating on the music for Wish You Were Here
(September 1975), writing most of Animals (February 1977) and The Wall
(November 1979), and writing all of The Final Cut (March 1983).
All were million sellers, with The Wall in particular rivaling the sales of The Dark Side of the
Moon. (Waters was the sole author of "Another Brick in the Wall Part II," a gold,
number one single drawn from The Wall.) Following the release of The Final Cut,
Pink Floyd broke up and its members launched solo careers. Waters re-emerged with
The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking (April 1984), which went gold. He followed with
Radio K.A.O.S. (June 1987) and went on tour to promote the release. Meanwhile,
David Gilmour's solo album About Face (February 1984) was also a gold seller,
but he was discouraged by that showing and recruited Mason and Wright to re-form Pink Floyd.
Waters sued, seeking an injunction to prevent the trio from touring as Pink Floyd without him,
but he lost the case, and the Gilmour-led Pink Floyd went on to tour and recorded successfully.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Waters organized an all-star performance of
The Wall in Berlin on July 21, 1990. It was filmed and recorded,
resulting in the album The Wall - Live in Berlin (September 1990).
He released a third solo album, Amused to Death (August 1992), but did not tour,
though he made an appearance at a benefit concert in 1993.
He spent much of the 1990s working on an opera, Ca Ira, in French and English.
But in July and August 1999, he mounted his first U.S. tour in 12 years.
It was so successful that he returned for a second leg in June and July 2000,
and the concerts served as the basis for the two-CD set "In the Flesh".
