My Life As A Call Center Agent

I am a call center agent, everyday I am receiving 600 calls from people who are asking a favor to help them resolve their issue.

My job is boring, stressful, and painful. But why I am still staying with this kind of work? It is mainly because of the compensation I am getting from this kind of job.

It is important that you love your job. Yes, I do. I am not hating it despite of the disadvantages. Because this is the job I chose to have.

But sometimes, I feel that I am doing this job just because I need it not because I want it. I love it but more of because I need it. You know what I mean? It's a feeling of becoming tired of doing the same thing everyday of my life.

Being a call center agent is not an easy job because it is more of a Job than a Career. If you want this job. Better yet to read my confessions here about this job before daring yourself to make a resume and apply.

I hate my job because

#1 Irate Customers

The People Who Are Smarter Than You

Irate Customers are type of customers who are not satisfied with the way you handle their tantrums. They curse. They are mad. They yell at you. Willing to stay long in a call with you just to ruin your good mood. They are people who knows everything, can't appreciate your help. Can't understand where you coming from. They don't want to listen to your willingness of helping them instead they just talk...and talk..and talk... These people are my customers. And my life inside the call center depends on them.

I am also a customer, I also buy at a grocery store, visit a spa, having a new haircut, eating a delicious food in a restaurant etc. That is why I understand where the irate customers are coming from. I know the feeling of unsatisfied, being upset, and disappointed because the product that I bought is not good, or the service that I receive is a failure. But despite of these negative feelings, I still remain calm.

I never and will never be an irate customer because I know how hard it is to be in a customer service job. Toxic!

You Are My Irate Customer If

You yell at me
You curse over the phone
You are asking for a supervisor
You are not listening to me
You are wanting to get my employee number
You are asking my supervisor to fire me

What Will You Do?

#2 The Graveyard Shift

Being Awake During Night Time

Morning in the Philippines is night time in the States, that is why my schedule at work is from 11pm to 8:30 in the morning.

Many of my friends telling me that this is really bad for my health. And it's true. That is why I make sure that I am taking my vitamins regularly and sleeping at least 6 hours in the morning and eat some vegetables and fruits.

I am also not smoking and making sure that during weekends I sleep at least 8 hours.

But since I am really a sleepyhead person, It took me 6 months to get used to this kind of schedule

#3 Work During Holidays

Santa Claus Hates Me Because I'm Always Busy During Christmas

It was December 2005 when I first celebrated my lonely christmas in the office. Yes, if you are a call center agent and the type of account your in has a 24/7 schedule. You will surely miss holidays like me.

It's true, you will receive a double pay when you work during holidays like christmas but the question is...are you willing to sacrifice your holiday for money. If you can...this job is for you.

#4 Wearing Business Casual

Even If It's Raining

I am not appreciating this rule. Why do I need to wear business casual the fact that our customers are million miles away from us. We never see them. It's only through phone and a pc connection we communicate with them. Well, if it's company policy, it will always be a policy strictly implemented. And as an agent, you can't do anything but to follow.

Take Note: And sometimes even if it's raining they still require us to wear business casual...Does it make sense?

#5 You Can't Be Absent. You Cant Be Late

Even if your at the most unstable condition, your having a flu and all that. You can't be absent. Or else you will receive a corrective action form. Even if you call your boss that you are not feeling well, no consideration will be made specially for critical working days like monday.

And here's another catch, if your 1 minute late, you are considered absent. Period.

Reminder

If you will be absent, make sure that it is a valid reason. Having colds, dizziness, stomach ache, toothache is not a valid reason. Tell them you have a swine flu. That's a valid reason. lol!

If You Hate Your Job Will You Still Stay?

It is important that you are enjoying what you are doing. But of course, not all the things you enjoy are beneficial.

My job is boring, yes it is. But since it gives me the opportunity to help my family, I can still keep the job that I have. It's just a matter of sacrificing things that you want to have a better life.
