I still have not gotten around to joining Pinterest. Maybe soon...

I love pinterest! I don't get the whole thing between pinterest and amazon---but easy to fix, don't use amazon in your intro. Still beyond me why amazon is arguing though since a pin would possibly mean more sales for them. Above my head! I had no choice on one lens so far but to put an amazon picture in the intro and in that case I highlighted a note in the intro asking that it not be pinned.

These look like terrific, concise instructions! I will try to follow them once I get a chance (pending invite according to the nice email I received from them). In the mean time, this terrific lens is certainly worthy of a Flyby Winging which can be found among the other blessed lenses for today at Have Wings Will Bless! They may call me an aimless wanderer, but not all who wander are aimless and I'm glad my aim was good when I wandered upon this. ~Ren

Interesing lens. I had no idea what Pinterest was all about, thank you.
  • AlishaV Feb 10, 2012 @ 2:15 am | delete
Pinterest is so much easier than I thought it would be at first sight. I didn't know anyone with invitations when I first started, so I just requested one directly from the site and was pinning things within moments after being allowed to join. It's lots of fun and I'm finding things I've never seen before.
  • Centavo Feb 9, 2012 @ 6:10 pm | delete

  • jeremykim2011 Feb 1, 2012 @ 7:44 am | delete
Dropping by once again to thank you for encouraging me, through your lens, to use Pinterest. As you said, getting an invitation would take a few days. I waited for my invitation. It was worth the wait. It just arrived about 20 minutes ago. I then immediately created an account, then started pinning! I instantly see its potential. I love it! Thanks again.
  • SandraGahlinger Feb 1, 2012 @ 7:05 am | delete
    Great lens!

I'm curious has anyone else had a problem with *porn* on Pinterest. I had just signed up and certainly didn't (nor would I) have that kind of content on my boards. I can't figure out how it got there. What was worse, I couldn't figure out how to remove it. Pinterest doesn't make "unfollowing" obvious. Once I learned how to unfollow, I tried to remove the offensive board (which would show up as my opening page!). I contacted Pinterest for help but never heard back. So, I canceled my account. (The page was super offensive, and I didn't want to risk exposing others to it.)

I was bummed. It looked like fun.
  • vallain Feb 1, 2012 @ 9:16 am | delete
That is distressing, Sandra. I've not seen any of that. I've seen some risque things, but unfollowed the pinners who had content I did not care for. I wonder if the site was attacked by a hacker. I'll go check my boards for any mysterious, offensive content that I did not pin there.
You might try signing up again, and be very careful what boards you choose to follow. Don't follow a pinner, just specific boards whose content you like.

I just signed up on Pinterest a few days ago, but haven't had a chance to review the platform and more importantly read the TOS which I think is the most important thing given that it is to do with using pictures. One thing that I noticed is that I couldn't see a copyright license (for example, like flickr has). At first glance, it looks like a great site, if used properly. Learned a few things from reading this useful lens. Thanks...blessed! :)
  • manlalakbay Jan 28, 2012 @ 11:37 am | delete

Seems like it might work--separate "board"s for different topics--sort of like making a lensography except that you can add other people's lenses as well as your own--like listing them in "featured lenses." I'd like to give it a try if someone would invite me, though I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time on it, as some people seem to do according to other posts. I'd just like to make a few good boards and fill them with lenses.

Useful information on Pinterest. I personally really love it, it's simple to use and the pins are very effectively displayed. As to the legality of using images, since they are thumbnails only, it's probably ok. Excellent information, blessed.

Thank you Vallain! I have been curious how other Squidooers were using Pinterest. I've just got one "lens" board at the moment. I really don't want to be too spammy with it. I think so far the integrity of the site as an "idea" sharing site is right on. I hope we can keep it that way!

I think this lens is a great help for anyone that has been thinking of joining but hasn't got around to it. I think it is great, it is a little bit like Flickr where you can copy the HTML code or share it straight to your blog.

I love these Pinterest tips. Learned some things about this social bulletin board that I did not know. Excellent article, as usual. (Thanks for the link to my own Pinterest lens, too.)

  • River_Rose Jan 25, 2012 @ 9:22 am | delete
Nice lens. Not sure it will help my squidoo lens and I don't want to waste my time trying something just for fun right now.
  • Brite-Ideas Jan 25, 2012 @ 9:21 am | delete
Very good lens, and pretty much everything you mentioned was how I see pinterest (in terms of trend ideas, sharing etc)

How very interesting! It's the first I've heard of this... I'm basically new to all of this, even squidoo... so articles like this are a boon for novices like me! I especially loved the way you've written and composed the whole piece!!

Do check out my lens and share your thoughts!!... Thanks!

I went and poked around on the site - looks like a lot of fun. In this lens it recommends getting invited by a current user in order to get quicker access. So - would any current user be willing to invite me?
    Thx either way

I'm a total newbie on Pinterest (2 days) & have yet to build my first lens on Squidoo, so the info you've given here is perfect for me. I pinned this to my Fave Squidoo Lenses board and will be back to visit your other teaching lenses as I have time. My favorite tip from this page is the note about the first couple lines on your lens being used for search engines and being able to see how relevant the words are when you pin a lens. Oh, and congratulation on your LOTD.
  • grannysage Jan 25, 2012 @ 2:21 am | delete
Like the true librarian you are, you are always providing us with important information and resources. I shall try to stick more, I mean pin more, in the future.

Congrats on LOTD! Guess I need to start using my Pinterest account, too and figure out what to add. I think I would use it more for fun than anything. :)

This is an excellent resource. You're reminding me of something: Once in a while (like sometimes when I'm procrastinating) I go on a major "shopping trip" through Flickr Creative Commons and save links to many many things that would fit either on lenses I currently have or ones I am considering. Some things are too good to pass up even if I'm not sure what I am going to do with them. So them I end up with a really long email to myself full of links to pictures of vegan food, shabby chic decor, dollhouse accessories made of recycled items... etc. With a couple words here and there to try and identify them.Yes, it would be so nice to put this stuff on a visual bulletin board, and, yes, pin a few lenses while I was at.

But there's a lot of things I would be considered about pinning... things that weren't creative commons. I gather that Pinterest is providing embed code and that people are concerned others might see it as an invitation to post the pictures beyond Pinterest... on blogs or such... that artists and photographers could be harmed. I am wondering what your thoughts are on that.
  • scarlettohairy Jan 25, 2012 @ 12:28 am | delete
Nice job with explaining Pinterest. I can see why it got LOTD!
  • curious0927 Jan 25, 2012 @ 12:25 am | delete
I cannot wait to start Pinterest. This lens is absolutely inspiring, exciting, with perfect instructions. thank you!

My mother LOVES this site. I am almost afraid to check it out more frequently because I know that I will get sucked in :) I did not think that the site would be useful in my lensmaking, so thank you for pointing that out. Hopefully it will lead to some new ideas for my lenses, as long as I don't spend all day on the site.

Excellent lens, really worth the read. I've not heard of pinterest before but it sounds good. Would you be able to give me an invite to it? I've given this page a like.

Nice lens. Very helpful since I only just figured out what it was even... so thanks! Blessed.

Leave it to you, Virginia, to offer a lens to help us with Pinterest! Thank you!
  • crosscreations Jan 19, 2012 @ 5:37 pm | delete
Virginia, a Pinterest question... I notice there's an option for leaving a board open to others so that groups of people can post to the same board. I wonder if anyone is using that and if so, what kinds of ways would people use that for?
  • veryirie Jan 19, 2012 @ 2:52 pm | delete
    I'm enjoying Pinterest so far.
  • ubaldoherbert Jan 18, 2012 @ 3:25 am | delete
I want to know more about pinterest
  • vallain Jan 18, 2012 @ 11:53 am | delete
Take a look at the 2 Squidoo lenses on Pinterest that I included above. I suggest going to Pinterest and playing around a bit with it. Then you will have more specific questions and I'll try to answer those.

Thanks for the information. God Bless
  • lestroischenes Jan 17, 2012 @ 7:29 am | delete
    Managed to delete!
  • lestroischenes Jan 17, 2012 @ 6:25 am | delete
This is definately a lens that needed writing. I still haven't managed to delete a pin yet, will set up a test board and give it a go. My biggest worry is that if I pin a lens where I've used someone elses image in the intro, (flickr, wikimedia, Amazon etc) and credited it on the lens, when I pin it onto Pinterest I can't credit. What's your thoughts? (Could you answer on our fb page, please, Virginia, if you have any ideas? Many thanks.)
  • vallain Jan 18, 2012 @ 11:54 am | delete
To delete a pin, click on EDIT, then choose DELETE.
  • Pinkchic18 Jan 16, 2012 @ 11:43 am | delete
I love pinterest, and I agree - it definitely drives traffic! :)
  • BarbRad Jan 15, 2012 @ 1:57 am | delete
I enjoy it, but have to discipline myself not to spend too much time there. I need to be more conscientious in using it for promotion now that my boards have some content.
  • DesignedbyLisa Jan 15, 2012 @ 12:52 am | delete
I haven't shared my lenses - I worried about the "self promotion" warning.
  • jseven Jan 14, 2012 @ 9:59 pm | delete
Great lens, one thing I have not seen mentioned is that Pinterest pictures are not to be used for commercial use.
  • vallain Jan 16, 2012 @ 12:16 am | delete
Very good point and I need to add that above.
  • jmsp206 Jan 14, 2012 @ 9:05 pm | delete
I think Pinterest will bring more traffic to peoples lenses.
  • poutine Jan 14, 2012 @ 9:38 am | delete
I love my Pinterest and used it several times daily.
It brings me traffic to my Squidoo lenses.
  • FlaminCatDesigns Jan 14, 2012 @ 8:16 am | delete
One thing that I do is when I find something that I like the photo of, I be sure to click the link to find the original post. Once in a while I can't get to the original post that the photo came from. So in that case, I don't repin it. There is no sense in repinning a recipe or craft I want to try and then can't find it.
  • crosscreations Jan 14, 2012 @ 3:01 am | delete
Great idea to post these Pinterest tips for Squidoo. Does anyone know why it is that sometimes images arrive into a personal board saying 'picture of a pin' rather than the image itself?
  • vallain Jan 19, 2012 @ 1:30 pm | delete
My guess on the "picture of a pin" words instead of the picture is the picture is big and Pinterest or my computer are having a hard time bringing all of them up at once.
  • Zut_Moon Jan 14, 2012 @ 12:53 am | delete
Thank you for this lens. You are one pretty
smart cookie ,.... that's why I figure you must be Canadian .... duh ....
  • vallain Jan 16, 2012 @ 12:17 am | delete
My husband's parents were from Canada, but that's as close as I get to being Canadian. They grow them smart in Kansas too...
  • wordstock Jan 14, 2012 @ 12:31 am | delete
I have been found by incredible people who share incredible things. I have found even more and if I weren't trying to get something done on Squidoo, I would spend all day there. It is so much fun. Thanks Virginia for putting this together for the rest of us.
  • Comfortdoc Jan 14, 2012 @ 12:07 am | delete
Virginia. Thanks for putting this together. I am hoping once the semester slows down a bit, I'll be able to find some time to figure out Pinterest. Looks like a fun resource for visual people.
  • GramaBarb Jan 14, 2012 @ 12:07 am | delete
I just pinned this lens into my Good Advice Board on Pinterest.
