Starter basics

2.Using a roller or your finger(if copying Clara Bow style) to twist your hair tightly towards your head and hold against your scalp
3.With your other hand hold the curl in place and slip your finger out of your hair.

The Basics of Pin up Girl Style

Style basics

So you want to be a pin up girl, but don't know exactly what you need. What about the style of Pin Up Girl? Are you a saucy vixen like Bettie Paige or a All-American Blond girl like Betty Grable? Maybe you're a sexy vamp-ish pin up girl like Greta Garbo or Clara Bow. Or sweet and innocent like Mary Pickford. Whichever type of pin up girl you wish to be, this article can help you pick the right clothes and make up.

Pin up girls come in all shapes, sizes, hairstyles, hair colors, skin color and height. The importance of being a pin up girl isn't so much the style as the attitude. A pin up girl is vibrant, sexy and confident.

Select a hairstyle:

Pin up girls all have different types of hairstyles. Clara bow, Vargas girls, Betty Grable, Rockabilly and Betty Page all were the hairstyles women copied.

The basic for every pin up girl hairstyle is the pin up girl:
(see bulleted list above)

Vargas girls, named after a famous illustrator of pin up girls, used large bows and flowers in their hair and commonly wore a pony tail to the side around the pin curls.

Rockabilly styles are the rock girls of the 1950s and usually wore a pompadour with a bandana tied around the back and fastened on the crown, or large bee-hive hairdo (hair teased into a large "hive").

Betty Grable was the classic or traditional pin up hairstyle. Her soft pin curls swept up from the side of her head and then twisted and pinned over a teased hair at the crown. The lower half of the hair hung down in waves and curls.

Bettie Page style was a fall of soft wavy hair in pitch black. Her signature was look was her bangs, which were cut short, just off the top of the hairline, and curled slightly under.

Flowers, ribbons, pins and barrettes are all part of every pin up girl hairstyle.

Whats a Girl to Wear - Pin Up Girl Clothing

Clothing is the single best part after hair that defines a pin up girl's style. Halter dresses, wiggle skirts, and swimsuits styles were all influenced by pin up girl photography.

Halter dresses are among the most popular of pin up girl dress styles. Generally fastened behind the neck with a tie, halter dresses are tight around the bodice and waist and flow either soft waves, like Marilyn Monroe's dress from The Seven Year Itch, or with big crinoline petticoats like Betty Page wore in many of her photographs. Betty Page also made famous the Peter Pan Collar on halter dresses.

The wiggle skirt dress was created for just what the name describes: a wiggle. Pencil thin skirts were worn with tight bodices. The wiggle dress was very popular in swing and jitterbug dancing. Marilyn Monroe made this style famous, by wiggling down the train station platform, while being ogled by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in Some Like it Hot.

The famous swimsuit styles used by pin up girls were made popular by Ethel Merman. Ethel was a synchronized swimmer and had very muscular legs and a very fit body. Her famous legs were nothing compared to Betty Grable's but then again Betty Grable made the swimsuit famous with her infamous picture, which was distributed by to the GIs in WWII.

Makeup and Accessories for the true Pin up girl

Pin up girls are always perfectly made up. Use a base and concealer to even out your skin. Lipsticks are always matte and a blue-red color, Mascara should be dark and eyelashes lengthened. Eyeshadow can be natural or blue.

Bangles, hair clips with bows, flowers, feather clips, large straw hats and hair nets are the best ways to accessorize your hair.

Pin up photography is usually chosen in poses which are sexy but not sexual. A pin up model should suggest a hint of naughty but show a sweet and innocent face. Peeking at the camera and showing off your legs are the best pin up poses.
