"Unfortunate incidents with skirts and petticoats often led to embarrassing lingerie displays - stockings, garter belts, girdles and bullet bras just couldn't be kept under wraps no matter how hard a girl tried!"
Gil Elvgren - The Master
20th Century Pin Up Artist
Gil Elvgren (1914-1980) considered by some to be the most important glamour and pin up artist of the twentieth century. From the mid 1930's through 1972, Elvgren produced over five hundred paintings of beautiful girls and women. As the years passed, Elvgren's influence was felt by dozens of younger artists who apprenticed with him, studied his work, or otherwise sought to emulate "the master". George Petty
The Petty Girl is born!
In 1933, the depths of the depression, Esquire Magazine was started. At a time when The Saturday Evening Post was a nickel, The Ladies Home Journal a dime, and Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan a quarter, Esquire debuted at 50 cents. Petty's illustrations were a huge success. Quickly dubbed The Petty Girl, the public clamored for more and Esquire was more than happy to oblige. The magazine was able to add fold-outs as a design feature and in the Christmas, 1939 issue, with a 30" long Petty Girl, the modern pin-up was born. It was money that finally severed the Esquire relationship and Alberto Vargas had been brought in as his replacement. The Petty Girls

Pin Up Artist Extraordinare!
Alberto Vargas was born February 9, 1896, in Peru. He was the son of a renowned photographer, Max Vargas, who had taught him how to use an airbrush by the time he was thirteen. Vargas' first encounter with America happened about noon at Broadway and Fourteenth Street, when he was suddenly surrounded by a lunchtime crowd of smartly dressed office workers. Mesmerized by their grace, sophistication, and beauty the young artist decided he would spend his life glorifying the American Girl. he was painting in a store window in May 1919 when he was asked by a representative of the Ziegfeld Follies to show his work the next day to Mr Ziegfeld. Within twenty-four hours, Vargas found himself commissioned to paint twelve watercolour portraits of the leading stars of the 1919 Ziegfeld Follies for the lobby of the New Amsterdam Theatre.more about Alberto Vargas
