*The* model to buy for those on a budget. J. Rude

When you're comparing turntables on the lower end of the spectrum, such as the Pioneer PL-990, it's very difficult to really find audible fault with these players...The sound of the player is nothing short of great, and not having played LPs for awhile made my old LPs come to life instantly. I'm REALLY pleased with this turntable - I love that it is fully automatic.  K. Squires

The good points

Pros:

  • Precision DC servo motor

  • Two speeds: Plays LPs and 45s

  • Fully automatic: push a single button to play and then the player shuts itself off when it gets to the end of the record

  • Highly sensitive low mass straight tone arm for better tracking

  • Universal cartridge connector with moving magnet cartridge included

  • Built in phono equalizer allows easy connection to any auxillary/line input

  • Low noise, low vibration belt drive

  • Rubber platter mat

  • Vibration reducing feet

  • Hinged plastic dust cover

  • Speed control

  • Arm control

  • Price:  even though the PL-990 is on the lower end of the price spectrum, its sound quality is excellent

  • Average Customer Review: 4.3 out of 5 stars

The bad points

Cons:

  • No way to bypass the built in preamp.  Thus the phono jacks on your reciever cannot be used.   However, this is not much of a problem if you have an auxillary jack to go into.

  • Not USB compatible

  • Does not play 78s

The bottom line...

Conclusion:

  • The combination of price and value make the Pioneer PL-990 an excellent choice for the home user on a budget.  It's hard to imagine a better value for the money.

jjaysmoker says:

I am not a Vinyl Snob by any means, But I will admit that Vinyl does have a warmer sound to me personally, Certain albums, Like Any of the Pink Floyd albums just have a more natural sound on vinyl, it does take some work cleaning vintage vinyl, but for focused intimate listening at home, nothing beats vinyl. This was a fantastic lens by the way, I had no idea the Sony and Pioneer were virtually the same. Easily one of the best product review lenses I have run across.

Cds are definitely better.
