Pipe organ calendars

Organ calendars celebrate the beauty and majesty of these remarkable instruments. The variety of size, shape, design, colour and sound is endless and they make memorable images for a calendar sure to delight an music lover. With images from countries around the world, old and new, historic and little discovered, magnificent or charmingly small - organs come with infinite variety.
When I design my organ calendars, I look for images for two main reasons:1) images that make the viewer gasp with surprise or delight; and 2) images that have plenty of detail and interest that will give the viewer something to look at in the entire month they see the picture. Pipe organs very often have the "wow!" factor immediately, and the interest value is also high, especially for the fans. But sometimes I look for something a little extra, such as in the photo here of the cover of "Ceilings and Cases" - which is one of my new calendars for 2012.

Pipe organs

Not the boring instruments some people would have you believe

Organ in Montpelier Cathedral, FranceIt's bizarre - the pipe organ is the most diverse, one of the oldest, and most widespread, and most powerful instruments in the world - but people have been known to cringe and shy away from concerts. Why? Maybe there have been boring concerts which have put them off, or they simply imagine that this magnificent beast is just like the little harmonium that uncle Fred paddles away at, reluctantly, on Christmas morning in the tiny church on the prairies.

Not a bit of it - simply look at some of the pictures of organs in my calendars and you begin to understand that no two pipe organs are alike - and hence the fascination!

Lenses about music in general

VERY in general!

I like to explore the whole world of music, not JUST organs, although they are my chief love. Most basic of all, is the ability to read music, even if you don't perform. It can open your mind to so much more about the music you are listening to. So for a start on my new page, I present a wonderful source for the person wishing to learned to read those dotty things.
