"I wanna be a pirate when I grow up"

When kids take on a new obsession (pirates, for example) you can often feel like you're swimming against the tide to try to keep up with them. If junior wants to be a pirate, he wants everything piratical - and right now please mommy, or you'll walk the plank! We have foam-rubber swords in our house, pirate costumes made from ripped shirts and old scarves, telescopes made from empty paper-towel rolls and many bottles of rum (apple juice in a plastic bottle with a hand-drawn skull and crossbones sticker stuck on).

And that's all very well. But one trip to Toys-R-Us and suddenly little Captain Complain-A-Lot wants Lego Pirate This and Knex Pirate That - and unless we plunder any treasure ships ourselves anytime soon, my wallet isn't going to stretch that far. Pieces of eight, pieces of eight!

So, I've trolled through the web, and found the pirate toys and games I'd be most happy spending my hard-won gold on. Hope you like them.

Pirate Ship Play House

Your very own life-sized pirate ship

Oh boy, do I wish I had one of these when I was a kid!!!

Can you imagine it? A pirate ship in your own backyard, in the garage, in the playroom? Your kids would be the envy of every other scallywag in the neighborhood.

This totally amazing piece of play equipment is from GuideCraft and sold through MyToyBox. It's made of hardwood, non-toxic paints, conforms to safety standards - all the good stuff. Take a look.

Wooden Pirates

I've got a bit of a thing about Wooden Toys - because I don't like plastic ones. Here are a bunch of wooden pirate toys - mostly from toysellers "Melissa & Doug" because I approve of their safety standards and eco-conscious approach to toy making. There's some interesting and different things here.

The best of the bunch

The best model pirate ship out there

Ok, so it has a bit of price-tag too, compared to some of the other pirate ships around, but Playmobil is an excellent brand. Someone bought this for my daughter's third birthday. I was initially a little apprehensive, as I don't particularly approve of plastic-plastic-plastic in children's toys (see my lens on Classic Wooden Toys.) But this product is FANTASTIC. It's excellent quality and has survived quite a few months of being sailed up and down the hallway in galeforce winds without the slightest bit of damage. Honestly, nothing is broken or even bent yet, and this is the No. 1 toy in our house right now. Not only is the Little Squid completely wrapt with it, but I enjoy playing with it too - and that means I spend far more time playing with her rather than sneaking off to make a cup of tea while she's otherwise occupied.

Pirate Lego

I played with Lego when I was a kid, um, erm, thirty years ago. It was great fun back then, but it's awesome now. This pirate themed Lego is a huge hit in our house.

Pirate Swords - Foam Rubber

These are tops! And they're so cheap. Grab one for every member of the family and the battle is on! We have 3 in our little house - and they are completely harmless. The littlest pirate gets a huge buzz out of sword fighting with the grown-ups, bashing away with all her might, totally unable to believe she's getting away with it, and she couldn't hurt a fly. The mad-cap, crazy, laugh until you're lying on the floor, FUN that you will get out of these is easily worth ten times the price-tag. And... they're quite a bunch of fun for the adults too. You know, I'm seriously thinking about taking up fencing.

Arrgghhhhhh!!!!! (Ouch!)

And at the end of the day, when the pirate-play is over, and the bumps and bruises need to be attended to, what better bandages for your little buccaneers?
