Pixar Animation Studios' Short Films

While Pixar creates its beloved feature films, it simultaneously tests computer animation and story telling techniques by producing short films. They're the training ground for the artists and the technology wizards at Pixar to test the new medium.

The eighteen (18) short films created by Pixar Animation Studios which are showcased on this lens are a testament to the creativity and commitment of the people who work at Pixar.

Watch the YouTube videos of the short films, read about them, and fall in love all over again with Pixar.

The Adventures of André and Wally B.

The Adventures of André and Wally B. (1984)

The Pixar short film "The Adventures of André and Wally B." proved that computer animation was possible.

The Adventures of Andre and Wally B.- introduces us to an android named Andre--the name Andre is derived from "android"-- that is woken up in the middle of a forest by a pesky bee named Wally B. The film was meant to showcase the new technologies that were being developed: every aspect of the project pushed computer graphics to its limits.

Pixar Tidbit #1

When John Lasseter was learning to make models he chose the nearest object to work on: the architect's lamp sitting on his desk.

He started moving it around and the lamp became the star of another short film by Pixar that was nominated for an Academy Award.

Red's Dream

Red's Dream (1987)

In this Pixar short film, written and directed by John Lasseter, you'll meet Red--the unicycle--and Lumpy the Clown.

Red is a unicycle; he's the sole item in the "clearance corner" at Eben's Bike Store. While sitting in his corner Red dreams of a better life in which he's cheered and loved by all. All too soon the applause is replaced by the sound of rainfall, and Red must resign himself to his fate.

Pixar Tidbit #2

Some of the challenges faced by Pixar while creating "Red's Dream" were the following:

  • It was a nighttime scene.
  • They added raindrops.
  • There's juggling in the film.
  • Pixar's first "organic" character appears in this shortfilm: Lumpy the Clown.

Red's Dream on Wikipedia

'''Reds Dream''' is a short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and directed by John Lasseter, which was released in 1987. To date, this is the only short that has not been attached to one of Pixars feature films, the only Pixar Short to be rendered on the Pixar Image Computer, and the first Pixar Short to feature an organic character: the circus clown known as Lumpy.

Tin Toy (1988)

"Tin Toy" laid the ground work for what would become "Toy Story", the first feature-length computer animated film.

Tinny--the wind up musician from "Tin Toy"--was originally cast as Andy's new toy in "Toy Story". However, he was eventually replaced by the high-tech Buzz Lightyear.

Pixar Tidbit #3

The Pixar short film Knick Knack won the Best Short Film award at the Seattle International Film Festival in 1990.

In 2001 Terry Gilliam selected it as one of the ten best animated films of all time.

The Pixar short film "Gerri's Game" won an Oscar for best animated short film of 1997.

Geri's Game (1997)

'''Geris Game''' was written and directed by Jan Pinkava.

The film is set in an empty park during the Fall. Geri is an elderly man who plays a game of chess against himself, "becoming" each of the players by moving to the other side of the chessboard, where he changes his personality and either puts on or takes off his glasses to show which character he's playing.

The first Pixar production to have a human main character, Geri's Game was produced with the goal to perfect human animation.

---------------------------------------

Helen: "I think your father is in trouble."

Violet: "If you haven't noticed, Mom, we're not doin' so hot either."

--------------------------------------

Mr. Incredible: "Of course I have a secret identity. I don't know a single superhero who doesn't. Who wants the pressure of being super all the time?"

The Incredibles

Mr. Incredible: "I've been meaning to ask you. Of all places to settle down, why..."

Mirage: "A volcano? My employer is atracted to power. As am I. It's a weakness we both share."

Mr. Incredible: "Seems a little... unstable."

Mirage: "I prefer to think of it as misunderstood."

Mr. Incredible: "Aren't we all?"

One Man Band

One Man Band (2005)

This Pixar short film was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 2006, but lost to "The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation".

A little peasant girl has one gold coin to make a wish at the piazza fountain. She encounters two street performers who immediately begin to compete in an effort to entice the little girl to give the coin to one of them. What follows is a duel of the one-man-bands. Like most Pixar shorts, the film is completely free of dialogue, instead using music and pantomime to tell the story.
