Welcome to my Squidoo autobiography!

My Squidoo profile page

Hi, I'm Mark.

I was born on July 26, 1978 and have lived in the NYC metro area all my life (Bergen County, NJ to be exact). I grew up in North Bergen, where I spent many of my younger years with my grandparents, who I admired greatly. They (as well as my mother) were Croatian immigrants who escaped post-World War II Yugoslavia to find a better life in the USA. My mother was only 7 when she came here, my father, however, was born in Pennsylvania state, amongst a heavy coal mining region. His dad was a coal miner and retired early, after being diagnosed with black lung.

As for me, ever since I was a kid, I had a huge interest in advertising, looking at & drawing logos, and watching television (especially Sci-Fi). I used to draw extensively. Although I basically never draw anymore, I kind of migrated that talent over into graphic design.

Presently, I work in Marketing Management, Advertising, Graphic Design and Search Engine Optimization. Yes, it's a gigantic mix, but I have learned so much over the years, and it's an invaluable toolset in today's world! (it's kind of fun, too!) I have a really varied and kind of strange list of things I like: beyond the usual sports bars, I'm a big NJ Devils fan, I watch a decent amount of TV: especially shows like Prison Break, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, Family Guy, and reruns of Seinfeld and The Simpsons. My favorite show of all time is probably Chappelle's Show. As for movies, I'm a huge fan of The Matrix (especially Reloaded) and of course, Star Wars (who isn't...)

I'm also into video games, as long as they were made in the early 90s or later: I'm a huge fan of the Nintendo Entertainment System (as it was a huge part of my childhood) as well as old PC role playing games. I still play multiplayer Neverwinter Nights, even though it's kind of ancient at this point. I also still play Sim City 4 when I have the spare time, it is an amazing game when heavily modded (I go to Simtropolis for SC4 mods). I never had much of an interest in buying any of today's consoles - I think today's games have a lifespan of 1-2 weeks tops, and they're way too expensive, to boot..

In the next 5 years, I see myself as being my own boss. I find working for someone else nearly unbearable, especially when I could probably double my salary by using my own ideas for my own benefit. Overall I just feel as though I have "entrepreneur's spirit." I've been freelancing graphics and advertising since 2000, and it's more fun than work to me.

My General Area

This is basically where I live (or at least a town away from it!). And no, I don't live under the bridge :p

Random NJ-related Photos on Flickr

NJ is a weird state, I'd be the first to admit it - it has its really bad areas and it's pretty decent areas. Look out for some amusing pics that might show up in this randomizer:

My Squidoo History

I've been a regular loyal member of Squidoo since April 17, 2007 - it's been a part of my daily routine since then! I first stumbled upon Squidoo when I saw its logo in a social bookmarking toolbar on someone's site. It's still one of the strangest logos I've seen in my life. Anyway, as the months passed by, I started accumulating dozens of lenses.

As of Fall 2007, I have about 110 lenses and 45 groups spread across 2 accounts (one is for entertainment lenses, this one is for everything else). Squidoo helps pay my annual URL bill, since I own about 60 URLs with GoDaddy and it's quite expensive to upkeep!

On September 19, 2007, I was chosen to be a Giant Squid (for those who don't know, it's a merit from Squidoo for having 50 or more notable lenses).

One thing I've gotten much more into lately are Squidoo Groups. It's fun when some of your groups get a big degree of notoriety and attention - and you help pass along your group's strength to other lenses that are in the same category.

They're not moneymakers, but seem to be helping a lot of people out there:

"My best work", according to me!

I think these are my crowning achievements out of everything I've done on Squidoo:

My Education

Education is a huge deal in my family (we're a highly competitive family...), so expectations were always pretty high. From 1996-2000, I went to Saint Peter's College in Jersey City and started off as a CS major. I wound up hating the monotony and boredom of computer programming, and switched to Marketing Management after my first year. I immediately loved the field, and in 2004, went on to get my MBA with the University of Phoenix. Here's a list of all of the educational stuff I've accomplished through the years. I'm probably done with degrees at this point!
  • 1998 Emergency Medical Technician B
  • 1999 Emergency Medical Technician D
  • 1996-2000 Bachelor's of Marketing Management
  • 2001-2002 CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster)
  • 2001-2002 CompTIA I-Net+
  • 2004-2006 Masters of Business Administration

Pretty interesting information. My 2 & 4 year old granddaughters love GHOSTBUSTERS also. You should hear them sign the theme song. I grew up 30 minutes from Beach Haven. I'm a shore kid myself. Have a wonderful holiday.
