Herb garden designs for the modern home

Herb garden designs have been around for centuries. During the Middle Ages, the lady of the manor always kept a fully stocked herb garden, both for seasoning and preserving foods, as well as medicinal plants. The medicinal plants were provided to anyone in the surrounding township in need of a remedy. These women were highly skilled and knowledgeable about the use of these medicinal plants and keeping them in plentiful supply was a matter of honor. There's just something wonderfully romantic in keeping an herb garden. Then, as now, herb garden designs are planned in both formal and informal layouts.

Formal herb garden designs can be incredibly elaborate, with paving stones forming a surround and pathways between beds. This type can consume a considerable amount of space, which few of us have in our own gardens. However, there are several ways to make an attractive herb garden design, on a smaller, but no less beautiful, scale. Even if all you have is a small, sunny spot on a balcony, you can still have an herb garden.

If your space is limited, decide on the purpose of your herb garden. Do you want to grow herbs from which you can make fresh herb teas? Do you want a selection of fresh herbs to use in cooking? Maybe you'd like to try growing some of the medicinal herbs. You can also choose fragrant herbs, some of which are also medicinal. Of course, if you have plenty of room, you might try planting several herb gardens, each with a different design.

The traditional formal herb garden designs are typically either circular or of geometric design. Exposure for the plants must be carefully considered, as some herbs thrive in full sun, while others need a shadier location. When you're planning your herb garden, take the height of each plant into account so that you can arrange the taller subjects towards the back, or center, depending on your design.

Unless you have a great deal of room, or become so fascinated with growing herbs that you're willing to pull out the flower beds, an informal herb garden design works best. This style makes it much easier to situate 'like minded' herbs together. This also allows for having a mix of in ground, planter box, raised bed and strawberry jar collections. Some herbs, such as any of the mints, are quite aggressive and can take over your prized flower bed in a few weeks, so these are best in pots.

Your herb garden can be integrated into your overall garden design as well. For example, creeping thyme is lovely along a pathway with stepping stones. This is a well behaved, tidy, plant that fills in around the stones without obscuring them. It's also soft underfoot, gives off a delightful fragrance and can take a little traffic, none the worse for wear.

Making your own custom herb garden design is a fun and manageable project. Most herbs are fairly small, but packed with a great deal of flavor for teas and seasoning. As for the medicinal types, lavender is a great addition to the herb garden. Next time you feel a headache coming on, inhale a healthy dose of lavender flowers. Your headache is gone before you know it. Herbs are wonderful!

Easy ways to save on gas and increase your mileage

Just as we were all breathing a collective sigh of relief at falling gas prices, here we go again! Gas prices had inched down, almost to the point of being manageable. Now, as the weather starts to warm up, the price of gas jumps once again, just in time for summer would-be travelers. One might even think they were doing this on purpose! (Yes, I believe they are. :) However, almost everyone needs to drive, at least some of the time. So it's time again to be thinking of ways to save on gas. Here we provide several tips to help reduce your gas bill.

If you regularly drive to work on in-town routes, consider biking instead, at least 2-3 times a week. It's good exercise! In-town driving really eats up the gas. If you need to travel on the freeway, see if you can't get a car pool going with neighbors or co-workers. If you can get four people in your car pool, this is one of the easiest ways to save on gas. Everyone wins.

When you're on the highway, put the cruise control at 55. Our 'fast lane' mentality gears us to drive the speed limit, but you'll get to your destination just a few minutes sooner at 65 than at 55, while burning a significant amount of gas to save a couple of minutes.

Get in the habit of checking all of your fluid levels once a week. In warm weather, you'll want to check your water more frequently. Anything that makes your car work harder while running costs you in gas.

Speaking of warm weather, don't turn on the a/c at the first hint of hot. Try rolling down the windows and making do with some fresh air, when possible. This is one of the great ways to save on gas - that air conditioner reduces your gas mileage tremendously. If your car has been sitting in the heat, just let the a/c run for a few minutes until it's cooled down inside. Then turn off the a/c and roll down the windows.

Keeping your tires properly inflated is another of the essential ways to save on gas. Get an accurate tire pressure gauge (not the cheapest one) and use it. You can increase your mpg by about 10% with this little trick.

Changing your oil every 3000 miles and keeping up on your tuneups is another way to save. Remember, anything which reduces the overall effort of your engine saves you money on gas consumption.

Here's one of the little known ways to save on gas: if you need gas, buy it in the morning. Gas stations often raise the price during the course of the day - upwards of course! They usually do this in mid-afternoon.

While you don't want to leave your car running unnecessarily, you do want to allow your engine to warm up before driving off. This gets the oil circulating and saves wear and tear on your engine.

These ways to save on gas won't make you rich, but will certainly reduce your gas bill. Try using these tips and track your mileage for a happier result!

No matter how good or how bad the economy gets, money saving tips will always come in handy for people. Saving money tips just make good sense. If you are going through good economic times, putting a little bit away for a rainy day is always a good idea. If things are tough, keeping a good household budget is even more important. The bottom line is this: the sooner you start save a little bit of money, the better. Not only is it good for you financially, but it makes a lot of sense psychologically as well. After all, who wants to wait for the money to dry up and have to spend all their time worrying about how to make ends meet? Not me, that's for sure!

Unfortunately, most Americans don't seem to feel the same way as I do - especially young people today. Ignoring the money saving tips of their parents, millions of Americans abuse their credit cards only to have it catch up with them later. Being in debt is not just about being behind on payments. When you are seriously in doubt, every financial decision is filled with anxiety. Each purchase must be carefully weighed, and the worry over whether or not you will be able to pay your bills and make ends meet is always in the back of your mind. People in debt constantly berate themselves for not having followed household money saving tips earlier to save themselves from the hassle they are currently going through.

Still, being in debt is not the end of the world. You can still use money saving tips to come out of it and end up debt free within a reasonable amount of time. The important thing is to research all of your decisions carefully. There are thousands and thousands of debt consolidation services, but many of them are scams. They take advantage of the lack of financial understanding that gets people into debt in the first place. Although they can be your salvation, they can also just dig you deeper into the hole. Make your decisions wisely!

One of the best money-saving tips is to start having the money you have make money for you early on. By investing in an interest-bearing savings account, you can come out ahead each and every time. You might as well put your money to work for you if you have it!

About Homeschooling Children

Things you should condider.

There are many facts about homeschooling that parents should know, when weighing whether or not to educate their children at home. Rather than sending their children to a local public school or paying for a private school, the option of homeschooling is attractive to some families who want to control the environment their children learn in.

Some parents opt to use tutors or specialty teachers to supplement some of the classes parents themselves choose not to teach. Some parents feel their children will develop stronger values and morals if kept at home to be schooled instead of facing public school. Some families live in areas where they are not comfortable with the status of the public school available to them, making homeschooling a great option.

Families living abroad in another country may opt to find out about homeschooling. This is because if they live in another country and do not speak the primary language, they may feel more comfortable with their children in a controlled learning environment. Also, the quality of education is important to many parents and being able to choose what their children are expose to is very valuable. They can focus on areas important for obtaining good test scores, instead of doing "busy work".

Some areas of the country require parents to use a curriculum to educate their children. If the curriculum is not strictly followed, legal action could be taken.

One nice feature about homeschooling is that children can use workbooks that allow them to work at their own pace. Many time in private or public schools, children rush to catch up and end up falling behind in classes. They possibly could even be labeled as failing students, which could be emotionally stressful for them.

There are resources available online to help parents make sure they are sticking to the appropriate developmental timeline. There are live tutors and tests that students can use to broaden their education.

Since homeschooling curriculums do not cover elective classes, students have the option to choose artistic classes that are sometimes cut from regular school budgets. There are options for students to take these classes at a nearby community college.

Students must take several tests before qualifying to apply for college. It is important for students and parents to keep detailed records of all the schooling and certifications that have been completed.

Students can join church groups, community centers, camp, art classes, choir, etc. to interact with people their own age.

Advice for Decorating Small Spaces

How to make your small room look big!

If you are living in the city, you probably are all too familar with the harsh truths of living in the city - and the harsh truths behind the jokes about living in a closet. City real estate is at such a premium that apartment sizes push the limit as to the amount of liveable space a person actually needs. I know that living in Brooklyn was certainly a challenge in this regard, especially as it relates to decorating small spaces. Decorating small spaces is on one hand a challenge, and yet, on the other an opportunity. If you are decorating small spaces for yourself, here are some tips that I have picked up that can help you make that space your own.

The key to decorating small spaces is the same as the key to decorating any size space; unity. I think you should be striving for unity in two senses. First of all, scale. Scale in this sense means both the scale of the furniture and decor relative in size to each other, as well as the size of these things in relation to the space itself. For instance, you want the different pieces to be of appropriate size to each other, nothing too big or small. Furthermore, you don't want a couch that squeezes into a small space. When decorating small spaces, this is a no-no; a big place like a table can actually make the room seem smaller. A better idea would be to have a smaller table that fits the room better.

The other bit of unity you should be concerned with when decorating small spaces is in aesthetics. You want everything to 'fit' visually. Note that this does not mean to "match", which is a common mistake. Matching can create a boring and unsuitable effect, whereas a unity in aesthetics creates a singular look, without getting all matchy-matchy.

Decorating small spaces is an opportunity to express yourself with unity in aesthetics and scale because of its small size. You can decorate small spaces for less money in most cases, as some large and expensive pieces simply won't fit in small spaces. You might have to get a little bit creative, but the expression will be all the more rewarding for you and your guests.

Regardless of whatever style you are searching for, decorating small spaces places a premium on the ideas of interior design unity. Having appropriate sized and styled pieces are the key to successfully decorating small spaces.
